Chapter 5

Moving from setup to setup was quick at the studio. Mom helped move the furniture, Johnny could go into the dressing room alone and change into any outfit they asked of him. The photographer was amazed.

“Mrs. Lindsley, it's going to be a beach seen, you think she can wear just the swimsuit without a diaper underneath? It'll be a better picture that way,” the photographer asked mommy.

“Yeah, I think she can for just a little while.”

“Honey, you had better potty to make sure.”

“OK, mom...mommy,” Johnny corrected himself.

“Gracie, I want you to braid your hair into pigtails too.”

“OK, pigtails.”

“She can do that by herself?”

“Yeah, she's very mature.”

The photographer and mom prepared the set. The photographer wasn't going to do this initially since it usually takes a while to set up. But Gracie was so independent that he had plenty of time put everything in place.

In the dressing room, Johnny stripped out of the costume he was wearing. He pulled off his pull-up he was completely naked again.

Johnny decided that he didn't need to potty. He knew he could control himself. He wasn't really a toddler. He simply stepped into the one-piece swimsuit. He pulled it up over his body and put his hand into the thin straps. It took only a couple of seconds. Johnny had grown used to wearing girls' apparel by now. Johnny didn't need any shoes or tights. Johnny took a brush and brushed his hair to make a part in the middle. Then he started on the left side. He divided his hair into three parts and then braided it starting at the top and moving down. He secured the end with a bow that matched the color of his swimsuit. He did the same for the left side. Johnny retouched his makeup and returned to the studio. He was finished before the set was properly decorated.

An agent who represented the model for the subsequent photo shoot saw the entire scene. He recognized talent when he saw it. A toddler who not only was quiet and respectful on set, one that didn't complain and could get ready without any help was worth her weight in gold. The agent would have to speak to the mother of this talented little girl.

The photographer gave Johnny a plastic pail and shovel. Johnny didn't need to be told where to go. He walked to the mat covered in sand in front of the green screen. He sat on the ground and started to shovel sand into the pail. The photographer started to take pictures immediately.

“Make sandcastles,” the photographer called out.

Johnny got onto his knees and turned the pail over. That was the base of the sandcastle. Johnny worked on his castle.

“Smile.”

Johnny smiled as he worked.

“Giggle.”

Johnny giggled.

“Stand up and look over your shoulder.”

Johnny abandoned the pail, shovel, and ½ finished castle and turned his body away from the camera then looked over his shoulder and smiled. He didn't need to be told to face away from the camera. The agent took notice of how little instruction 'Gracie' needed while working.

“Your little girl is very cute,” the agent informed mom.

“Yes, she is.”

“She takes direction very well too.”

“I know.”

“I think your daughter can earn a lot of money as a model.”

“Thank you.”

“No, I'm serious. I'm a talent agent. Here is my card.”

Mom looked over the glossy card.

I'm shooting a layout for a line of dancewear. I would love for your daughter to be in it. What's her name?”

“Gracie.”

“That's a very pretty name.”

“Thank you.”

“I can give you $2,500 for three hours of work.”

“That's a lot of money.”

“Not for top talent, like Gracie.”

“I don't think so.”

“The shoot is today. We are doing it here. Have her try it. Whether it works out or not, you'll have $2,500.”

“I don't know.”

“How about $5,000?”

“For just today?”

“Yes.”

“I think maybe just for today, I don't know if I want Gracie to be a full-time actress.”

“Then it's a deal?”

“Yes.”

“What size is she?”

“2T. She's small for her age.”

“That's actually better. She's definitely very mature. Probably more mature than most girls twice her age.”

“More than that I think,” mom winked at the agent.

“I'll get everything started. The shoot starts at noon and it'll last three hours.”

“Only three hours?”

“Yes, with children this young, there are laws. We have to get it all done in that time. That's why Gracie is so valuable. If they can control themselves and take directions, we can move fast. We don't have much time.”
