“They expect me to wear this!”

“They expect you to do everything that Samantha did. So what?”

“It's a dress.”

“No, it's your uniform. No one will think you are out of place if you wear it.”

“I know, but I'll know.”

“Get over it. It's just clothing.”

'I know, but...”

"You said you would do it. Delaney is all excited to go. Do you want to disappoint her?”

“No.

“Then man up and wear the uniform!”

“But can't we do something where I wear the male uniform?”

“The way it works everyone will treat you like Samantha. That means you will have the same expectations as Samantha. You have to wear the proper uniform.'

“There has got to be another way.”

“It'll be fine. You'll fit right in.”

“I've never worn a dress before.”

“It's really no big deal. You won't have to wear it on your off time.”

Kurtis didn't think of that. He realized something else. Kurtis would be sharing a cabin with two other counselors...women counselors. Last year he remembered sharing the cabin with two college co-eds. They would be dressing and undressing right in front of him. They wouldn't think that anything was odd. Kurtis could do the same if he liked. Kurtis knew he couldn't hit on them, that would be odd. In the end, Kurtis decided that wearing a dress was a small price to pay to be allowed to share a cabin with two hot co-eds.

Still, his uniforms were too small for his body due to his weight gain. Opening day of camp was coming up, he would have to buy uniforms in the appropriate size. He phoned the camp.

“Hello, Happy Land Day Camp,” the receptionist answered the phone.

“Hi, this is Kurtis Beckster.”

“Hey Kurtis, how's it going?”

“Not too good.”

“What's wrong?”

“I put on some weight, and I don't fit into the camp uniform.”

“Not a problem.”

“You don't understand, I put on A LOT of weight, and I need the uniforms soon.”

“Don't worry. You can go to School Uniforms Shop. They are a national franchise and carry all our uniforms. They have everything you need.”

“Thank you, I'll call them.”

“Glad to help. This is Andrea, how is it going otherwise?”

Kurtis remembered Andrea from the camp. She worked the switchboard and did a bunch of other things. Invariably it was her voice that provided the morning announcements. She was a pleasant woman that everyone liked. Kurtis knew all this about her, even though they technically had never met.

“It's going OK, I guess.”

“Are you still dating...umm what's her name...Jamie Lynn?”

“No, we broke up.”

“That's too bad. I really liked her.” Kurtis had indeed broken up with Jamie Lynn. They had been dating for over 18 months but had broken up a few months ago after Kurtis lost his job and started to gain weight. Not only did Andrea know all about Kurtis, but he knew all about her.

After some small talk, the connection was broken with a promise they would catch up more when he was at the camp.

The next call was to the uniform store. He would have to stop by for a fitting since he wasn't sure of the size. He was clear that he was a man and that the uniform was for him, but the clerk didn't have any problem with Kurtis buying female uniforms. Kurtis got the address and said he would be there this afternoon.

The next call was to Kurtis's best friend Peter. He had to tell him that he was going to be away for the entire summer.

“Peter, I have some news.”

“What?”

“I'm going away.”

“Where?”

“I took a job at a summer camp.”

“Another camp besides Happy Land?”

“No, that's the one.”

“So.”

“So, I was just calling to tell you.”

“What's wrong with you?”

“Nothing.”

“I know you're going.”

“How?”

“You've been talking about it for months. That you're going to be Delaney's counselor.”

It hadn't occurred to Kurtis that everyone knew about his summer job; that he had told everyone about it. Kurtis guessed he wouldn't have to tell anyone since they apparently already knew.

“I'm sorry, I guess I'm so excited to go.”

“It's OK. You are leaving next week?”

“Yeah, on Monday.”

“Have fun.”

“I'll try. Look I have to go, I have to pick up some new uniforms.”

“OK, see ya.”

“See ya.”

Kurtis put the address of the uniform store into his GPS and drove out there. It was a relatively big warehouse that contained uniforms for all types of businesses and schools. Most of the inventory was in the back.

“Hello, I called, I need uniforms for Happy Land Day Camp.”

“Do you know the style?”

“Yes, it's HLFS-527-03.”

“Do you know the size?”

“No, I need a fitting.”

“OK.”

“What colors?”

“I guess an assortment. I don't want to look like I'm wearing the same thing every day.”

“Let me take your measurements.”

The clerk was professional and efficient. He measured Kurtis for the Happy Land Day Camp Female Staff uniform style 527-03.

“Do you need matching Spankys?” Spankys are worn under the uniform incase it rides up to prevent everyone from seeing the underwear underneath.

“OK, I'll get those too.”

The clerk found the proper style and brought out a sample to confirm the size. Kurtis brought the apparel to the dressing room to try it on. He removed his pants and shirt leaving him in only his underwear. First, he put the spankys over his male briefs and then pulled the uniform over his body. Kurtis knew this was the first time in his life he had ever put on a dress. Despite that fact, wearing this type of dress felt familiar. The uniform had a lot of give. It needed it to allow him freedom of movement. The counselors joined in the fun with the campers and needed apparel just as flexible as the clothes the campers wore.

Kurtis draped the uniform over his head and let it fall into place. There was a small button on the top back above a keyhole opening to secure it. The full skirt landed just about at Kurtis' knees. It was then that he realized that he would need some matching socks as he didn't want to wear tights. Kurtis sort of instinctively knew that tights could be too warm in the summer weather of the camp. Knee-high socks were better although no-show socks could be worn too.

Kurtis removed the uniform and stepped out into the store.

“Yeah, this fits well. Can you get me some knee-high socks, two pairs for each color?”

“Surely.”

Kurtis paid for his items and returned home.

Kurtis started packing as soon as he returned home. He had become excited about his summer at camp. He could recall many memories of the good times he had there and was looking forward to having them again. Kurtis tried to ignore the fact that none of these were his memories. They felt real to him.

Kurtis had to be at the at the camp a couple of days prior to the campers arrival. He was staff and had orientation and preparation. Kurtis didn't need to be oriented as he remembered doing it all before, but that was the time when the staff, old and new, got acquainted with one another.

“I'm ready to go, mom. Let me have the orb.”

“I thought you were kidding. You can't use the orb. You have to be a woman. That is how it works.”

“I don't care. As long as I'm 'attached' to the orb I want it with me.”

“It'll be better if it's kept here. What if you lose it?”

“I won't lose it.”

“But if you lose it then you won't be able to switch back.”

“So, what.”

“I still think you should leave it here.”

“You said I could take it with me.”

“I did.”

“Are you going to?”

“I made a promise, but I don't think you should.”

“So, give it.”

“ARE YOU SURE?”

“Yes.”

“OK.”

Mom retrieved the orb and gave it to Kurtis. He put it in his suitcase to be taken with him to camp.

“Be careful!”

“I will. I just want to know exactly where it is.”
