Chapter 14.

“WHAT DID YOU DO!” mom demanded from Peter.

“What?”

“You know what.”

“I don't.”

Look at my flowers. Look at the backyard it's a mess.”

“I didn't do it.”

“Oh, it must have been Olivia who was playing volleyball with a bunch of boys?” mom asked sarcastically. The evidence was clear. The net was still up, and the backyard was a mess. It was obvious that Peter and his volleyball friends were acting wildly all afternoon yesterday.

“But I...”

“Don't lie to me!”

Peter knew he couldn't tell the truth. How could he tell his mother that it was really Olivia who had done it? Olivia had an alibi; she was out with her friends trying on tops at the mall. All mom had to do was call Sarah for confirmation.

“I'm sorry,” Peter said.

“You will be! You'll be punished!”

“First you are going to replant the flowers. That is for sure!”

“Yes, mom.”

“But that isn't all. I want you to vacuum the house for an entire month. You will also do the laundry and wash the dishes.”

“MOM!!!”

“Do you want to do it for two months?”

“No,” Peter answered meekly.

“I'll pick up the flowers later, but you can start this afternoon right after school. You will do the vacuuming now.”

“OK.”

That day, Olivia couldn't go to her dance class. But Peter did go to his usual workout at strength training. While paradoxically, Peter also vacuumed the entire house. Mom made sure that Peter was wearing an apron she always wore so he wouldn't get his apparel dirty. The apron Peter was forced to wear contained a floral pattern in peach. It had two large pockets in front, and it tied in the back. Mom made sure he tied it using a big bow.

Mom was purposefully making Peter do typically womanly things. She wanted to see if Peter would confide in her.

When Olivia returned from volleyball practice, Peter was still cleaning up the house.

“It's not fair!” Peter told Olivia when they got alone. “It was you and your friends that caused the mess.”

“I know. But there isn't anything for me to do. I can't tell Mom what really happened.”

“Why not?”

“Do you want mom to know what you've been doing?”

“I've been thinking about that.”

“You want mom to know you've been dressing like a girl and taking gymnastics and dance?”

“What is wrong with that. I mean the gymnastics and dance.”

“But as a girl?”

“They allow boys in the class.”

“You would have to tell them too. How do you think they will react when they know you have been fooling them.”

Peter didn't want them to know. He didn't mean to, but he would feel like he was betraying his new friends. They all thought he was a girl.

“But it's not fair that I have to do all the housework for a month. I didn't do anything wrong!”

“I guess I could help you.” Olivia took the vacuum from Peter and started to push it around the room.

“That isn't enough.”

“I can't do it all. Mom would know.”

“I can't go to the Y while I'm being punished. I can't do anything! It's all your fault and you still get to play volleyball!”

“I don't know what you want me to do about it. If I tell her the truth, you still won't be going to the Y. I mean I don't think you will go. You would have to tell mom that you wear girls' clothes at the Y. We both will probably get into a lot of trouble.”

“But it's not fair!” Peter keeps repeating this phrase. He didn't do anything wrong, but he is paying for what Olivia did.

“Olivia, that is Peter's punishment. Stop helping him!” Mom yelled when she saw Olivia with the vacuum.

“I'm sorry, mom.”
