John's mother had had enough. John had been breaking the rules: staying up late, drinking, fighting, and what he did with that girl was the last straw.

John's mother took complete control over John's life.  John didn't know how she did it, but everyone now saw John as a little baby now.  Now, Mommy was going to put him back in diapers.  As one last indignity, she sent John to the closet to fetch them. 

"I'm your Mommy. What I say goes. I'll consider turning you back only after I run out of diapers.

When he saw how many diapers were waiting for him, John felt physically sick.
