Richard thought that the pink light was only a tinted bulb.  He didn't know it was the sign of a creature that was changing him so completely, that not only his body changed, but his apparel too.

When Dickie realized what had happened to him, now her, she should be upset.  She wasn't upset at all.  If she were to describe how she felt, a better word would be giddy.
