Chapter 26

Joanna's new driver's license finally arrived in the mail.  Ethan was now officiallyand legallyJoanna Baughman.  At least according to the DMV.  It was the first official document to list Joanna's new name.  It came right on time.  Joanna didn't expect that from the government.  "Well they can't be late all the time," Joanna thought.

Lily-Rose entered Joanna's bedroom on Thursday and said, "It's time to select outfits for next week."

"Next week?"

"Yeah, for when you start working.  You didn't expect to wear the same outfit every day."

"I hadn't thought about it.  I suppose I would choose in the morning before work."

"Outfit planning takes time.  You know that.  This can't be done first thing in the morning.  You have to plan a week of outfits."

"Alright, what do we do first?" Joanna said with resignation.

"We look at next week's weather.  We have to see if it's going to be too hot, too cold or if it rains."

This made perfect sense to Joanna.

"Now how to plan a week of outfits.  Start with the tops.  Since your problem area is on top, broad shoulders, lack of a chest, it's best for you to start there.  So select your tops."

It was always tops, not just top singular, because the layering effect worked very well to disguise Joanna's problem areas.  Although the problem area had improved recently.

After five sets of tops were selected, bottoms, most of which were skirts were selected.  The bottom also included tights to make her legs look as feminine as possible.

The outfits were put on their own special hanger so they could be retrieved with one hand.  Finally, jewelry and accessories were set aside for each outfit.  The entire process only took forty minutes to accomplish.

"It takes a lot longer when you don't have much time in the morning.  Plus, it's better to think about these things now when you can concentrate.  This way you know you aren't wearing similar things two days in a row.  Now with your brand new ID and all your outfits, you are ready for the week," Lily-Rose informed Joanna.

"Now what?"

"Well now that you have your new driver's license, let's go to the bank and get your accounts changed and also write to the credit card companies and fix them too."

Joanna knew better than to argue with Lily-Rose about such matters.  She knew what was best.

Chapter 27

By the time she was ready to start the job, Joanna was an expert on shoes and better yet she loved them more than he ever thought was possible.  Although, Joanna would be still nervous on her first day.

"Joanna," Dr. Morris's pregnant receptionist said cheerily as she bid Joanna enter the doctor's office with a wave of her left hand.  "You're right on time.  Go right in."

"It's starting to move fast," Joanna informed the doctor.  "I got my new driver's license and I am starting work at a shoe store on Monday."

Since, legally, Joanna was now female and will be referred to as she and her from now on.

Even though Joanna was still doing all the voice exercises that Mindy recommended, she already spoke in an effortlessly feminine voice.  She didn't even think about how her voice should sound anymore.

"Excellent."

Joanna was required to wear a short dress or skirt, no farther down than knee length, and wear shoes and textured tights that could be purchased at the shoe store.    Joanna didn't mind as she was paid a bonus if anyone purchased the shoe or hose that Joanna happened to be wearing.  Today, Joanna was wearing a black classic pump by Menolo Blahnik.

If asked, Joanna could tell a customer anything they wanted to know about either of these products.  Not just the generic features about them, but how they felt when worn for long periods of time standing on one's feet.  As well as which outfits would look good with these shoes and hose.   If there was a question that Joanna couldn't answer, she would take the time to learn the answer for the next customer.  Joanna was always learning.  Which was one of her life lessons

Some of the life lessons that Joanna was learning to be a better woman, she knew zhe would apply to the rest of her life.  The life she expected to return to after this assignment was over.  She made a list of ten elements:

1. Keep in mind that no one is perfect.

2. Imagine yourself being confident.

3. Stand up straight.

4. Avoid arrogance.

5. Be yourself.

6. Summon patience.

7. Be a lifelong student.

8. Stop talking and listen.

9. Be positive but pragmatic.

10.  Find a purpose in life and go for it.

Joanna's biggest problem with working at the shoe store was that as it was a full-time job and five days a week, she was missing her soap operas during the day.  She had to make time at night to watch them instead.  Lily-Rose knew not to disturb Joanna when she was watching her soaps.  She wasn't just involved in the storylines, she was addicted to the show.

Joanna felt in many ways that the characters were her friends in real life and she was involved with their problems.  She sometimes wished she could speak to the characters and give them some advice she had so recently learned.

Joanna determined to be honest with all her customers despite the bonus.  If she was asked a direct question about what she was wearing she would give a truthful answer.  Today she was wearing dotted tights, but she didn't think they lasted very long.  Joanna preferred the Wolford synergy 40 leg support tights which revitalized her legs over the long day and rarely got runs in them.  But they were over $50 a pair and she didn't think women wanted to pay that much for a single pair of tights no matter how good they looked, or how well they felt, or that then never got runs in them.  Joanna wore them all the time, (sometimes even with long dresses, despite that they couldn't be seen very well.)   She got a couple of free pairs from the shoe store.

"Hello, my name is Joanna, how can I assist you today?" Joanna said to every customer she encountered.  She knew that her smile would convey confidence and enthusiasm for what she was doing.  It became a natural part of her persona along with her gait, makeup, speech, expressive gestures, and attitude.  All elements combined to make her not a trans-woman in her mind but an actual woman.

"Yes, Joanna," one of the customers said, "I just love your pumps."

Joanna loved that the customer referred to her by name.  It built a rapport.  She stuck out one foot in front of the other to give the customer a better look at the shoe while gesturing with her hands.  Joanna's painted fingernails guiding the customer's eyes to the shoes.

"I don't blame you, they are elegant and comfortable, I can walk in them all day.  These are Menolo Blahnik pumps.  The square gold buckle at the toe contrasts the black color of the shoe and accents the squared-off toe. It's made of the finest leather with a two and three-quarter-inch heel.  Perfect for both the office and a night out on the town.  They cost $495 reduced from $665."

In the middle of her speech, Joanna lifted her foot even more so the customer could get an even better view.  It was a pose that she had seen high fashion models use.

"That is a lot of money," the potential customer complained.

"But they are Menolo Blahniks and they are so comfortable.  They're worth every penny.  I've been in them for over two hours so far and I have and any blisters.  You won't find a better shoe!"

"They are elegant and I like that they can be worn to work for a classy occasion, or with a little accessory adjustment they will look good for a night on the town."

Joanna knew she was on the verge of a sale.  All she needed was a little sweetener.

"If you get our credit card I can also give you an extra ten percent discount."

"I'll take them."

Joanna loved what she did: great commissions and wearing great shoes she could never afford.

Chapter 28

Walking in heels was part of her job.  Joanna knew she had the gait and mannerisms of a woman: small steps, freedom of movement, etc...  But, she wasn't the most graceful.  Joanna didn't need to be told that she had to add an element of grace.  She wanted her movement to flow like a ballerina.  It had to be natural, not over-exaggerated.

The problem was that her muscles were relatively big and she had to learn to move as if her muscles were smaller.  The best way to do that was to teach herself to have more fluid movements in everything she did, not just in walking, but also when she bent down, picked up a pencil, or even brushed her hair out of her eyes.  All these movements had to look natural.

As far as being accepted by the community to fulfill her undercover assignment, Joanna was sure that the more she made an effort in her transition the more that people would open up to her.  Joanna hadn't had any first-hand knowledge about the serious harassment of the people in the trans community.  There was some harassment, which was tragic.  No one deserved to be treated poorly.  But it was expected and not what she was looking for.

At work, she was fitting in, but that wasn't a place to find out about what was going on on the streets.  Joanna made progress in passing.  But she wanted to make more.  Her goal was that if someone told her she was doing XYZ like a man instead of a woman, she should consider that either as an insult or a compliment depending on the situation, but not as an accusation.  For example, if someone, probably a backstabbing bitch told her that she had the shoulders of a man, that was an insult and should be dealt with accordingly.  (It could be handled in a lady-like or non-lady-like fashion as Joanna chose.  Joanna wanted to be thought of as a woman, but that didn't mean she had to be thought of as a lady.  Most women weren't ladies all the time.)   Joanna shouldn't think that the woman knew that she wasn't biologically a woman and worry that she was being clocked.

Back at home, she didn't smile as much as at work, but her emotions were much more evident on her face than before this assignment began.  Her face possessed the gamut of emotions when she watched her favorite soaps.  She was invested in all the characters and their problems.  As a woman, she was expected to show her emotions, especially sadness and weakness.

When Lily-Rose got home, she insisted to celebrate Joanna's new job that they go to the True Colors Club.

"But I've been on my feet all day," Joanna complained.

"I don't care, we are going.  You always love it there...and frankly so do I."

But as usual, Lily-Rose may have only suggested, but she wasn't going to take 'No' for an answer.  So they went.  Joanna didn't mind, she had another wonderful time despite her aching feet.  She did spend more time sitting and drinking than dancing, but the music was fun and she enjoyed herself.  They sat in the same section as they had before.  The one with the waitress who wore a female mask and a bodysuit.  She was also dressed in the same uniform as before.  Joanna found that the waitress's name was Paul.

Chapter 29

As the week was coming to an end, Joanna marked out the outfits she would wear for her second week at work all by herself.  She started as she did before with the tops.

Joanna was around women all day at the store which was definitely having an effect on her.

Joanna looked at her tops, they were very nice, but she recognized how much better they and she would look if she had a little more on top.  She had been using padded bras, but if she had modest breasts, say a C-cup it would be much better.

Without asking anyone, Joanna went to the Internet, she wanted to buy her own falsies.  She typed falsies into google and found the definition right on top.  It was as she expected.  But all the listings weren't for false boobs, they were for false eyelashes.  That wasn't what she was looking for.

Joanna did a little more searching for the products she was looking for.  She spent the next two hours looking over all the options until she finally found her best choice.  Then she paid for them online and waited for them to arrive.  Joanna knew it would take time, this was a custom job.  What Lily-Rose taught her about wigs, went for breast forms too.  Buy high quality.  It was worth the wait and expense.

"Next month, with some luck," she thought, "I'll be able to wear some really cute tops."

In the meantime, she would shop for some bras in her new projected size and tops to go with them.  The excuse for shopping made it all worth it.  Joanna really enjoyed shopping these days.

Joanna didn't even tell Lily-Rose what she had done.  She wanted to surprise Lily-Rose by having Lily-Rose see her wearing them with a cute new top.

When they did arrive and Joanna showed them to Lily-Rose, Lily-Rose was overjoyed.

Lily-Rose had an objective appraisal of Joanna.  She remembered how she looked at the beginning and now how she looked.  It wasn't just the new falsies that Lily-Rose was looking at but she could also see that Joanna's skin was softer and smoother.  Her hips were wider and her legs more shapely.  Lily-Rose took several pictures of Joanna when this all began and unbeknownst to Joanna, she checked it often to ascertain Joanna's progress.

"They look great on you!  Let's celebrate!"

Lily-Rose's reaction didn't surprise Joanna.  That is why when she modeled her new boobs, she was wearing a clubbing outfit.  They danced the night away at the True Colors Club.  They sat in the same section, Paul served them of course.

Chapter 30

As the months passed, Joanna became completely comfortable with her new feminine persona.  She never heard the name Ethan anymore and responded to Joanna as if that was her real name.  She didn't even think about passing anymore.  She didn't even think of herself as a trans-woman, she mostly thought of herself as a woman.

When she would see Dr. Morris, "Joanna," Dr. Morris's receptionist would say cheerily as he bid Joanna enter the doctor's office with a wave of his left hand.  "You are right on time.  Go right in."  Joanna assumed that the receptionist had her baby and was replaced by a new male receptionist.

With Dr. Morris's and Lily-Rose's help, it became completely natural for Joanna to walk, talk and act in all ways as a woman.  It became so natural that she didn't think she was acting anymore.  'Joanna' didn't even have one piece of documentation that had Ethan's name on it.  All her credit cards and every other type of ID that Joanna possessed said that was her name is Joanna, including her library card.

Joanna celebrated each milestone towards womanhood with Dr. Morris and Lily-Rose, both were extremely proud of her.  Dr. Morris and Lily-Rose seemed to always be on the same page.  This made sense to Joanna.  Both were trying to help her to pass.

Lily-Rose would invariably celebrate with a trip to True Colors Club, where they were always served by Paul the masked, bodysuited waitress.

"The most important part of passing isn't voice or any of the mannerisms you have learned," whether it was a Lily-Rose who was telling him this or Dr. Morris didn't matter.  They both were telling Joanna the same thing. "It is attitude."  If you believe you are a woman, a real woman, everyone else will too.  You have to make yourself believe it."

"I am trying."

"As Yoda once said, "Do or do not, there is no try."

"I am doing."

"There is an old song ironically written by two men in the 1960s called 'I'm a Woman'.  That song is all about attitude.  Here listen to it...

Get all dressed up, go out and swing till 4 A.M.

Lay down at 5, jump up at 6, and start all over again

'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again

If you come to me sickly you know I'm gonna make you well...

You see it's all attitude.  I want you to sing this song.  But more than that I want you to believe it.  You've told me you've known you were a girl your whole life.  But just like in a court of law you can't have any reasonable doubt that it's not true."

"I understand."

"Listen to the song, sing the song, make it part of you.  Then you'll be most of the way there."

"I will."  Without realizing it, Joanna had come to the point that the only thing left of his male persona was a vague memory.

"Remember, you have to believe it!"

"I will."

"No, not I will, I want you to say 'I DO!'"

"I DO!"
