I was watching this on cable a few years after if came out and realized that the place they were pulled over by police (and pretended to be impersonators) was right in front of my apartment! They filmed it a year before I moved in. Cute movie. Next time you’re thinking about movies involving U.S. presidents, you might want to consider The American President (1995) or The Contender (2000). By the way, the first government shutdowns were under Ronald Reagan. There were several of them. Fun fact: All paid federal employees are furloughed when the government “shuts down” except for a very small skeleton crew of “essential personnel.” But they still need to get work down, so they rely on unpaid interns. When the government shut down in 1995, they had unpaid interns doing stuff at the White House when the place was fairly empty in comparison to its normal state of people everywhere. This allowed an unpaid intern to actually be alone in a room with the president. Her name was Monica Lewinsky. And the rest is history!

I believe that the widow of a former president does retain secret service protection unless she gets re-married. And possibly if she were to divorce the former president as well she may lose further protection.
