My mother was part of an online community in the mid to late ‘90s that would get together and go to Star Trek conventions. They even met Gates McFadden, who played Dr. Crusher on The Next Generation. This is exactly how cons and the “geek” community are, and it’s fantastic. Like someone else commented, less making fun and more an homage. This movie is fantastic and never fails to make me happy. So glad you enjoyed it.

This is my mother's absolute favorite movie and, like most character driven ensemble films, the rewatch value is incredible. These are all actors who have the chops to play the lead and know what they're doing (so there's ALWAYS something unspoken with their characters going on in the background). There's always something new to catch! For example, "Fred" played by Tony Shalhoub, is basically high for most of the movie. If you notice, he's constantly eating (and silently carrying around this big paper grocery bag full of snacks and -presumably- more drugs) and reacting to everything around him in a really chill/detached way...until he either loses or ditches the bag after getting the sphere and having to rescue Jason with the digital conveyor. It's so fun to catch all the little things... LOVED this reaction!!
