I really enjoy this episode a lot and I'm glad that you did also! While there a number of small things that bother me overall about this episode, the acting and dialogue is top notch, and it has that classic 'escape at the last possible second' situation that Star Trek has become known and loved for. We also see here the introduction of the shuttlecraft -- that oh so handy thing that could have easily solved a few problems from earlier episodes. :) Like with transports and phasers, shuttlecraft (and their later variant of runabouts) would become a staple for Star Trek and see heavy use. I give the writers a lot of slack though -- so much during the first season they were inventing things on the fly and making them up as needed. The yeoman included in the shuttle crew was written in the script as being Janice Rand. Since she was gone by this point, however, a new character was created to take her place. And always remember Star Trek was done on a VERY tiny budget, so it's perfectly fine to laugh at how cheesy some of the sets or items look, but it also never fails to amaze me how much they did on so little.

This episode could, and should, be used at military academies as a teaching tool for command and leadership.

Obviously this is Spock's episode but can we talk about Uhura just stepping up and basically acting as First Officer in this one? Relaying Kirk's orders into running this gigantic search operation from her station on the bridge, just doing the damn thing thing like a pro. Every other character kind of has their singular defining trait and I often find hers to be this low-key professionalism that I always find to be very satisfying. Just the model Starfleet officer.

Foam rocks and non convincing (funny) spears… can’t hold back a good, well acted story!
