Franz Kafka wrote the story called "The Metamorphosis" about a man called Gregor who wakes up one morning transformed into a giant, monstrous bug, an insect, vermin. It is the monotonous, dreary, wearisome, thankless life he leads providing for his parents and sister that makes him at subconscious level feel trapped, without an inner meaning for himself, without a self-fulfillment of his own volition and dreams. It is society, the system, the culture, life itself that binds him against his will. And his subconscious feelings about himself manifested in reality. And the worst is that everyone just accepts it as if it was the most normal things even as they are repulsed and shamed by Gregor. Sounds a bit like Walter at the beginning, no? The Metamorphosis is psychological, surrealist, absurdist, satirical. But it is also about a man's yearning for normalcy, for love, for appreciation, for praise. In this episode Walter knows what he is getting into with Gus after finalizing his contract. Yes, all the money, but right after he tries to kill himself driving in the freeway, before coming to his senses. It is perhaps his humanity realizing that it is wrong to go the path he has taken, in all levels and senses of the phrase. Anyway, that whole sequence with Gus and after is one of my favorites in all the Breaking Bad world.

There was a mention of Rain Man and you didn't understand it and you're overdue to see that movie. There are casual references to Rain Man all the time like in this episode and the escalator scene in The Hangover was a tribute to Rain Man. It starred Tom Cruise and won 4 Oscars. Don't read the plot just go in cold.
