I think the throwing stars you were thinking of are Shuriken. In the Batman mythos, he uses Baterangs.

One thing I don't know if you noticed and I haven't seen mentioned: Michael Caine (who plays Alfred here) went on to play John Brand in Interstellar (the astrophysicist/mathematician who recruits McConaughey's character for the mission). It might be interesting to see your reaction to a couple of other Michael Caine films from when he was a much younger man. Namely Get Carter (1971, a dark revenge thriller set in the world of British organized crime) or The Ipcress File (1965, a Cold War spy film with a very different vibe from the contemporary James Bond movies).
