Such a great movie, but like many other great movies not easy to watch - so thank you for taking the journey! Mel Gibson has directed some excellent movies, so keep an eye out for them. I think you understood in the end what he meant by "wits" - ie our self control and intelligence. Someone with "slow wits" is drunk or stupid and makes poor decisions. A quick-witted person always knows the right thing to say, or right thing to do. Also when you talked about how Wallace inspired so much action and loyalty after his death - that is what a "martyr" is. Sometimes Kings like "Longshanks" in this film would refuse to kill people like Wallace out of fear of making them into a martyr, and having everyone rally behind their legend &lt;3
