I suppose "erotica" as a class has some genre-like features -- in particular, there are a collection of ideas and narrative "tools" that you can find cropping up across different erotic stories, regardless of the setting and characters, and an author who's very proficient with the style of, say, "science fiction" may not be so great at writing an "erotic scifi" story. (But, similarly, an author who's very good at contemporary-setting erotica won't necessarily understand how to write a good sci-fi setting.) And of course there are "subgenres" of erotica, largely based on who the target audience is. Still, given that you can take just about any story and turn it into erotica simply by getting explicit about sex that otherwise would've happened "offstage" (whether in a romance novel, or mystery, fantasy, historical drama), it kinda seems like it's not quite right to class it as a "genre" itself. I feel like I want another word for that... It's almost like it's a separate mode of storytelling, like the "epistolic novel". You can tell all kinds of stories through letters.
