Flat chest or implants? Numb or try to preserve sensation? Susannah Hainley had some big choices to make about her mastectomy and what kind of chest she wanted after recovery.

The Ferret

Oh wow, that's really interesting stuff! Thanks to Susannah for sharing her experiences. :) I do sorta wonder why the numbness wasn't something that was brought up in the first visit, it seems kinda important! But I also guess they have so much to cover it's probably hard to fit it all in.

As someone who had a double mastectomy for breast cancer this spring, surgeons are genuinely surprised when you bring it up. Getting rid of the tumors and breast tissue is goal one. Restoring the appearance of breasts (but none of the function) is goal two. The "Breast Cancer and You" pamphlet they hand you lists the first benefit of reconstruction as "maintaining a feminine silhouette." I ended up opting to skip reconstruction and having a flat closure, partly on the anecdotal grounds that if I was going to get sensation back this was my best bet. Partly on the grounds that you’re not supposed to radiate expanders.
