My previous post about making a stuffed Ohmu from Nausicaa ended on a cliffhanger with the lines, "... not only did I send in my print order but my fabric just came in today! It is.... not what I expected. Oh my."

Recall: These are two of the three prototypes I made out of paper towels (the final one was disassembled so I could use the flat pieces as a pattern guide for my final digital design that I would have printed onto fabric). Note how they gently fit betwixt my (smaller-than-average) fingertips.

Now, here is the thing.

I am bad at math.

Like.

Real bad at math.

Which is how I wound up with:

LOOK AT HOW BAD AT MATH I AM.

Just. So bad at math.

But you know what? I'm actually happy with this accident because now I realize how much more fun it is to actually hug an Omhu. I am not someone who has slept with a stuffed animal for, like, the last 28 years, but the last couple nights? I mean, it just fits in my arms. I dunno, man. It fits in my arms.

Since I still have not actually bought a sewing machine like I'd resolved to in 2020 (I swear I was riiiiiiight about to when Covid hit U_U ), I had to sew these bugs together over a couple evening by hand. Every stitch? The guard around the flat side of my finger pushed the needle through to make it.

They turned out fine enough to show off here, but in real life the pattern still needs quite a bit of tweaking and I'd like to try a different fabric- something softer, snugglier, than this stiff stuff.

My original idea was to embroider on top of the printed fabric and I’d still like to do that but I need to tweak my pattern and order more fabric. Ideally I’ll get the pattern to a place that is adequate and then I’ll throw it up on Spoonflower for people who want to sew their own. In case anyone is thinking about asking: No, I really wouldn’t feel good about selling these guys in the pictures here😬 They are wooooonky in ways that I have intentionally left out of these pictures, and also the fabric I chose really isn’t that nice to hold. But lemme screw around a bit more! I may be able to produce something that is worthy of sending to you guys in real life ❤️

Matt assembled this undersea creature diorama on our counter.
