A work colleague has mentioned a few times that I really should do more negative reviews, that doing so many positive ones makes me look biased. We were emailing yesterday about this and they mentioned how one of their favorite past times is to read negative movie reviews, how it excites a part of their brain. I replied with the following and thought maybe you guys would appreciate seeing how my brain processes poor evaluations and why I approach them the way that I do:

Haha, I'm the opposite! I feel so bad when I read a negative film review. I mean, like, yes, there are bad movies. But as I read those reviews, I can't help but empathize with all the people who went into making that bad movie. I think about projects where I was excited to work on them, but over the course of the process things took a turn I wasn't expecting and then my name is stamped up there so it looks like I was on board for that end result when secretly I am crrrrriiinging and I can't say anything publicly and I relive that feeling every time I read about a movie getting trashed. Whether it's sex toys or movies or whatever, there's all these people who were each bringing their unique skills to get this project made and even though the end result isn't good they still devoted all this time and energy to making it --and not to mention all the time they invested into learning their craft beforehand! Years of somebody's life went into acquiring these skills and connections in their industry and then they devote their days (weeks, months, years) to working on this project and... it's a dud. I know I'm too much of a sentimental sap, but honestly it breaks my heart!

AND I DO TOO WRITE NEGATIVE AND CRITICAL REVIEWS!

I say what I don't like, I point out what doesn't work for me, I just... try not to revel in mean-spirited-ness, for the afore-mentioned reasons. (WHICH IS NOT TO SAY that I'm anti-mean-spirited reviews! They're fine! There's an audience for them! They need to be said! ...just... not by lip-trembly, hand-wringy, brow-furrowed me.)

Oh, and the attached picture is completely unrelated. It's a painting I did over the weekend. I JUST WANTED TO SHARE IT WITH YOU :D

I REALLY LIKE ARTICHOKES.

I enjoy the initial part of your negative reviews, where you usually outline the need the thing was created to meet — we always get your take on "what were they thinking" before you get on to how it didn't meet your needs. Also, your deep throat shortcut review was just an awesome illustrated thought process — the characters in your comics are fun and have interior lives to the extent that you can give them in a few pages of comic :)

I so dislike reading strongly negative reviews! I love how you handle them; especially since with sex toys, everyone is different, and you acknowledge something that doesn't work for you might work for another (while still addressing issues of quality). Very positive-feeling negative reviews. ^-^
