I made a beet box. This is how I did it.
(Mostly this is cross-posted from my updates on Instagram in early March, but also there are some additional bits here that I didn't upload elsewhere)

I am trying to make some beet leaves out of paper, improvising off of instructions for other leaves in Tiffany Turner's book, “The Fine Art of Paper Flowers” that one of my readers sent to me off my Amazon wishlist but there was no info so I could thank that kind soul. If it was you, THANK YOUUUUUUU 💕💕💕💕💕

Attempting to make beet leaves out of Lia Griffith doubled-sided crepe paper.

Turning my orange crepe paper red with a marker. This is to wrap around the stem.

Wrapping floral wire to make a red stem.

Stem is thicker than I’d prefer :-/

To watch this video of me giving my leaf a more natural edge, you have to go over to Instagram. Sorry! If Patreon would let me embed movies here, I would! Instead I have to take a screen capture and redirect you over there.

Same here! Click this link to watch me curling the edges of this leaf.

And then I made a second leaf.

Ok, cool! I didn’t have thin enough wire to make the little red veins that cover beet leaves in real life, but hopefully I can give that a go next time.

See it twirl on Instagraaaaam.

Phase 2.

Glue'in and cuttin'.

Like some kinda paper flower a pre-schooler would make.

IT LOOKS BETTER THAN I HAD HOPED IT WOULD.

OhmygoshOhmygoshOhmygosh.

This is just the lid, I still gotta do the bottom.

Matt thinks I should make it look decorated, like a flower pot, but I was picturing it ALL red? So it’d be one big beet box? .

Taking Matt's suggestion, I decided to wrap the bottom in paper that would contrast nicely against the red top, instead of making the whole thing one solid color. That patterned paper was used as fancy cushioning in a box that a sex toy company sent to Matt and me a year or so ago. It was all crumpled up to pad the contents of the box but it was so pretty that I flattened it and saved it for a year or so and nooooow it’s aaaaaart.

This is the coolest thing I’ve ever made.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, there’s a buncha little things I wish I could tweak and I just don’t have the skills (YET), but overall? I’M SO HAPPY WITH THIS LITTLE DUDER.

You can hide stuff in it! Your secrets! Your TREASURES!!! Maybe even... another beet? Like, a small one. Ahhhhh I’m so happy with how this turned ooooooutttttttttt 💕💕💕

Beet Box Bottoms 🍑💕

LOOKIT THIS FUCKIN’ RIDICULOUS THING I MADE.

Just a buncha paper and floral wire and glue and a craft store funny-shaped container.

I’ve got some ideas for how to make the red stalk show through on the other side and how to add in some red veins next time, so obviously I’ve gotta try this again.

Stay tuned for my SECOND attempt at this. I tried some different techniques for making red beet veins in the leaves and stuff.

I legit thought those were real beet leaves when I first looked at the opening shot, and that you'd built your actual-factual beet a little home. I was like whoa those guys got BIG!
