Hey friends!

I hope you are having a wonderful day

While working on some stuff I have got a question which, it doesn’t matter how many times I ask it myself I can’t seem to find an answer. Now that is a simple question in itself, but I just can’t decide, so I think the best thing is to make a poll!

When you are playing an RPG, would you rather play as a character with a surname, or with no premade name?

The biggest example I can give is Mass effect.

Would you rather play as [your character name] Shepard? or would you rather play as “Alliance commander” [your character name] ?

Another question would be. Would you rather play as a premade character*, like Geralt of Rivia in the witcher series, or as an unknown hero like in Skyrim.

*Ignoring the sex, as my games will always feature the option to select the character’s sex.

While this is not strictly related to Kinky Fight Club 2, I’m always investigating how to improve the appeal and design of my future games.

I have already started working on the threesome system, and fixing some bugs!

Let me know your opinion, and have a great weekend!

This is truly a dilemma.

the whole thing is kind of a spectrum between player freedom and tight storytelling. The less customizable your character, the deeper and fleshed out the story can be. Something like Witcher 3, with the Set-In-Stone-Hero, is almost like playing a Novel, while Skyrim gives you full freedom of expression with your Mainchar, but the Story barely involves you. Personally i prefer Mass Effects middle of the way approach. I found it very interesting that Baldurs Gate 3 actually gives you all three choices. You can either play one of the set-in-stone Origin Characters, you can play Dark Urge, which is party customizable like Sheppard, or you can play a full custom Char.

I think it also depends on the type of game you're making and the story that you're telling the more open ended the protagonist the more open ended the story needs to be to fit in that character. Me personally if I'm able to make my own character in a game, I want it to be MY character, none of this only picking a first name and having a default last name. Fallout 4 for instance felt like you were being locked in to being those default characters no matter how much you customized your character, I never truely felt that the male or female protag in that game were my characters. I prefer either a completely uncustomizable character like the witcher games or fully customziable I.E. Skyrim.

My two cents worth is that it is highly dependent on the nature of what role the player character and their party will have in their world as part of the story as well as how established their role is supposed to be at the start of the story in comparison to the amount of flexibility the story itself has with regard to how you can develop

In a game where there is NO VOICE ACTING why would you not want full customization as atleast an option?

Its dependant on what the game is and the audience your targeting. I'm only ever going to play as female for this so I'm not going to make a self insert character cuz I'm male. so the main character doesn't matter unless I'm made to care if its well written etc.

Having earnable titles would be cool though, if you still want to have a reason for people to address you in a specific kinda way in game
