This month's sketch for Mystery Street.  This is of course my take on a legal-aged version of the character. It always cracks me up how anime has always gotten away with presenting fourteen year olds as sex symbols lol.

I caught a few episodes here and there of Sailor Moon as a kid.  At the time, oddly enough, it struck me as the female equivalent of G.I. Joe. I think it's because they both had segments of their shows dedicated to cringe-worthy (even for the time) public service announcements designed to hammer in some obvious lesson at the end of an episode.

But what set Sailor Moon apart from its peers was the main character.  Now, keep in mind, I didn't watch the whole show. And I haven't seen any of the recent revival series so I'm no expert on the entire story. But what stood out to me most about her was that she was lazy, whiny, and not terribly bright. And when battling villains she would often leave a lot of the heavy lifting to her more competent teammates.

It sounds strange but I think her ineptitude was one of the more appealing aspects of the show, and a big part of why it seems everyone had heard of Sailor Moon in America long before anime became popular around here.  Her blatant flaws and shrill, irritating voice made her more relatable in a way.

Sadly, like most forms of entertainment that used to be fun, Sailor Moon as she was would never fly in mainstream media today. Modern female superheroes are certainly popular, but it seems most of them have to be perfect role models now or bored mothers will complain. But what do you think? Do you agree or am I full of crap? Let me know either way! :D

First of all, I want to say the picture is awesome. And for not watching the show, you're pretty spot-on on her description haha. It's a huge plot point in the series when they find out she's the leader because they all assume it's Sailor Venus, an already established, extremely competent superhero that the others look up to. I absolutely agree that it makes her far more relatable than most superheroes. To answer your question, though, they recently did a re-vamped version called Sailor Moon Crystal, and she keeps the same inherent flaws and such. I think the fanbase is predominantly the older fans, so I don't know if it qualifies as mainstream (plus, it's on Hulu, not Saturday mornings), but she's the same old Usagi.

There's also remastering of the 90s anime out and about. Usagi/Serena's a pretty fun character, and she looks really good here. A+

Aha, wow- this is a blast from the past. I don't think any fan's ever been as obsessed with anything as I was with this show in 1996 or so. I was IN LOVE with Sailor Mars (I know I get my thing for bossy, domineering women from her), and everything the Internet had on this show, I read. It fully got me into anime. It holds up surprisingly well, considering its age- the "filler" padding out the anime is actually the most fun.

Mars was my first anime crush. I had (have) a HUGE thing for long, silky, smooth hair, and Rei's looked so brushable.

Hey that's cool. Nice to hear they didn't strip the character of what made her fun in the first place. :)

Great! Maybe I'll check it out sometime just for the nostalgia. I haven't seen an episode in like twenty years now that I think about it.

Bob Fink

One of my favorite characters and you nailed her look perfectly, although I've never seen her in such an erotic position before :D

Probably won't have to look far to find more shots like this lol. I hear she's kind of popular. XD
