About sixteen years ago I played a game called Psychonauts. Like many (though not that many, the game flopped commercially) I was blown away by the characters, storytelling, and sheer unbridled visual creativity on display, but the thing that stuck with me most was something that doesn't get touched on quite so often: the atmosphere. Camp Whispering Rock feels like a real place from the moment they let you take control of your character, a real place where something is seriously not right. Everything from the skewed angles of the geography to the droopy base guitar soundtrack tells you that something sinister is about to happen here long before the story ever does.
There had never been a game like Psychonauts, and there never was again. Until a couple weeks ago! Hoooly shit Psychonauts 2 is finally here and it is awesome. It's everything I wanted in a sequel. This isn't a game review, but I really have to remark on how amazing it is that a sequel I waited sixteen years for actually exceeded my expectations. Anyway, let's talk about Milla.
I would describe the character design in Psychonauts as "what Sesame Street puppets see in their nightmares." If someone's eyes are actually sitting symmetrically on their head, they're what passes for attractive in this universe, but most everyone looks twisted and bizarre. That said, Milla Vodello here still managed to seem sexy to me. Her perky attitude despite a tragic past, protective nature, and position as a globe-trotting psychic super-spy just pushed all the right buttons for old Reinbach here. Just goes to show that there's more to creating a sexy character than just making her look hot, a lesson I could always afford to learn.
Anyhow, the pin ups are back! And I hope you guys like how this one turned out. As usual, feel free to comment any feedback you might have!
