Urd beats Belldandy in the polls this week, though not by much! I have to say that the tone of this week's pick would have varied depending on which sister won the vote.  Based on what I know of the characters, Urd would likely enjoy this sort of thing, while Belldandy would be embarrassed but smile anyway because she's impossibly perfect.

I liked Ah My Goddess back when I first saw it about a decade ago. I liked the personalities of the three sisters and most of the cast. Even though its premise was guilty of what I consider to be the most tired and obnoxious anime cliche of all: the bland, unremarkable dope who gets the most important/special/hot woman in the universe as a love interest without having to lift a finger, and hilarity ensues. That concept drives me insane. I ranted about it a bit in my anime episode of Reintalk.

Though to be fair the manga dates back to the 80's I think. And there was an anime back then as well, maybe that show was where the trope originated? Or at the very least it couldn't have been as tired and overused then as it is now. So I can't blame it for that.  Anyhow I remember this show fondly, and while I would have been happy to draw either sister I'm glad that Urd won this week. She was my favorite character on the show. :D

Yeah, OMG/AMG was fun back in the day, and spawned a ton of successors and wannabes, which is why it comes off so tired today. And yeah, Keiichi is the classic "lucky dope" character- the comic did a pretty good job of making sure he had good points (like his work ethic- BIG in Japan), and made him a royal butt-monkey a lot of the time as well. But still... he took like 25 years to kiss a girl who openly said she loved him. Plus there was that time Keiichi drank a love potion and his own sister tried to jump his bones. "Our love can overcome these foolish bonds of blood!" "Like hell it can!" It was funny how they made two kinds of "Ideal Women" in the comic- Belldandy was the "ideal waifu": sweet-natured, helpful, kind-hearted and would do anything, which remaining demure and pristine. Urd was just a snarky, brassy, Fanservicey boobalicious babe. I got through moods where either could be ideal. I think a lot of sad nerds LOVED Belldandy (I was totes in that group when I was younger).
