Tales of Vesperia just got a re-release this week, so I figured I'd take this chance to draw Estelle, the leading lady from the game. The number of entries in the "Tales" series of Japanese rpgs are simply countless. Absolutely innumerable to any but those who take the time to perform a quick Google search. But Vesperia is my favorite and, thus far, the only entry in the series that managed to grab me. I've tried "Xilla" and "Berseria" and wasn't a fan of either. If you care to suggest any of the older ones I should try, I'd be happy to hear them.

To me, a lot of what set Vesperia apart from its peers was the protagonist, Yuri. Funny thing about him: in my first glance at the cover art, I actually thought he was a girl. However, his androgynous look was cancelled out the minute he started talking in-game. I don't know if you've heard of a voice actor named Troy Baker (probably best known as Joel from "The Last of Us") but he's got one of the manliest friggin' voices you'll ever hear. The contrast was pretty jarring at first, but I got used to it.

Long story short Yuri won me over as the game went on. Without spoiling anything I can say his behavior was pretty edgy for the time, as this was before western rpgs gained popularity, and having the option to punch or fuck any NPC your character meets was not yet the standard. I found the rest of the cast likable in their own right as well. I got charmed by Estelle here pretty fast, her voice actress did a great job of sounding cute and naive without going overboard. I can't imagine when I'll have the time to go through an rpg anytime soon, but I'll definitely be picking up the remastered version when I can.

Are there any other relatively obscure jrpg characters that don't get enough fan art? Let me know! If I get enough suggestions maybe I'll pick two and put them to a vote.

Tales of Destiny!!! It's so goddamned charming, with such love and detail put into the world, great characters, talking swords, best waifus...

Noted! I'll keep an eye out for it once I get back home and start collecting again. :)

I was just thinking what a complete fucking cinnamon roll Estelle is. Playing the game again it’s hard not to be charmed by her. As for obscure RPG girls, hoo boy do I have a lot. Chris for Suikoden 3, Popful Mail, SO many Lunar girls...

Licorice Lain

I wish I could get into this game, but so far I just don't get the gameplay at all.

I do remember the battle system having a bit of a learning curve. I was seriously getting my ass kicked on some of the early bosses when I played it.

Licorice Lain

Like the guy you to fight at in that castle / dungeon after meeting Estelle is just :O. Definite learning curve.

I always wanted to play Popful Mail, but man collecting for Sega CD looks like such a headache and I've yet to take the plunge. The ultra-fragile jewel cases and generally expensive games have kept me away for years now.

I'm very thankful that I was a JRPG nerd way back in the day, and got stuff like PM, the Lunars, and Earthbound at retail. It's one of the very few times in my life where I feel like I was ahead of the curve!

The Tales serious is notorious for adding MORE mechanics in every subsequent game. Vesperia is easier than Zesteria, which is easier than Berseria, etc. o_o Vesp hit the sweet spot for me, I haven't been able to play any of the others on anything but Easy.

Licorice Lain

Kinda between games right now - just finished Automata after finally playing it - but trying to get work did. Maybe I will hit it up again later this year.

I dunno who this ..But I'm on board with pink hair.

So you don't like Xillia and play with english voices? I cancel my subscription :D (joking) But your're right. I never played Vesperia before (Playstation fanboy) and there's a lot of sexual insinuations. Like when you find what seems to be the sextoy of Rita. Or Judith (simply, Judith). But i'm yet to find in a japanese RPG with someone who get laid without getting romantically involved. If you like a game with "edgy" characters, i guess you'd probably like Resonnance of Fate. It's a pretty hard game, but worth it.

Abyss is one of the better ones in the series, but it throws you in at the deep end and expects you to roll with it while it dumps technobabble like 'fonons' and 'Lorelei ' at you. Tear is one of the more popular Tales ladies though (Estelle gets a costume to look like her in Vesperia DE). Also, where's the love for Rita and Kaufman? I don't even think there's any Kaufman fan art out there, let alone lewds.

Reinbach

I actually have that one! I picked it up at a retro shop last year. Still haven't played it yet though. I'll add it to my list. :D

Reinbach

I guess Estelle was just my favorite lol. But I liked the other girls too.

Well there's an HD remaster released last year, but i don't know if it's worth it (and it's pretty funny to call that a "HD remaster" when the original game was on PS3/Xbox360...)
