This is new to most of us here. The first episode introduces us to Percy and his world quite effortlessly. After establishing our protagonist’s backstory, we dive headfirst into the plot. The creators have laid solid groundwork for the story so that the tale can unfold without a hitch.

The show’s cinematography and color grading are top-notch. Although the protagonist’s performance isn’t particularly noteworthy so far, we are hoping it will improve in the episodes to come. Looking forward to this Percy Jackson journey.

JUST DROPPED EVERYTHING

Maddie

LOVE this show!

Mallika Anand

OH MY GOD I was waiting for this!!!

Amanda P

LETS GOOO

Marquis keel

The show doesn’t explain it in full but all half bloods are dyslexic and have adhd.

Jon C

Cant wait to see all your reactions. It has some parts done really well, but falls flat in some important places.

Angie H.

Walker Scobell's performance in this is certainly the standout among the rest of the kids!

Jacquelyn

I was so looking forwards to this show when it was announced, I was obsessed with the book series when I was younger. But the show honestly was disappointing to me, I found the pacing, writing, and acting subpar for what Rick Riordan was saying it would be.

Angie H.

a much more faithful adaptation of the books! the author and his wife were executive producers on this, unlike with the movies, which we *don't* have to talk about 💀 i grew up reading these books and am so happy they're finally getting a more accurate screen adaptation 🗣️

Eli

I agree with this, i'm hoping (if renewed) season 2 will be more smoothed out because I really like the casting that we have rn!

Marquis keel

They made gabe to likable he’s supposed to be exactly wat oak described

Angel Griffin

I just finished the last episode today! Can’t wait to rewatch with you guys to see what I missed the first time round🤘🏻🤘🏻

Angie H.

the story of percy jackson started as a bedtime story (circa late 90s early 2000s) the author would tell his son, who had dyslexia and adhd, as a way to show him that heroes could still be awesome WITH those learning disorders 🥹

Kyra Brown

I'm happy and excited for your reaction to this show I personally enjoyed this without reading the books and I think this show can become even better 😊 😄

Marquis keel

Yall were right it was a camaro

Angie H.

the first movie is not, objectively, THAT bad. what sucks about it is that it strayed very far away of the book 😭 from character ages to plot points lmao the second movie WAS plain garbage haha it killed any prospects 20th century fox had for a franchise

szeth

My only problem with this show is that it is so obvious it has a much smaller budget, or at least where it matters, because fight scenes are always so short, things like the scene with the fountain and the water not actually pulling the girl so it looks like percy used the force, scene with a random bush placed in front of grover to hide legs so they dont have to edit his legs in etc. I really hope later seasons continue tbh cuz books 3-5 are so good and hope they get more money because the story itself was good imo but who knows

Marquis keel

The author rick riordan wanted an American counterpart to the harry potter trio with Percy Annabeth and Grover and he succeeded in the books hope you guys love them as much as we do

szeth

Yeah... I read the books before seeing the movies and still was able to enjoy the first one quite a bit but the second one was not it lol

szeth

I actually liked the first movie quite a bit and I read the books before seeing it. It goes way off script but the visuals are great and has its own good story imo. Second was just horrendous tho

jenny meresse

There are multiple Percy Jackson books I remember reading before the original movies came out! The show has been to the books so far! Can’t wait to see y’all’s reactions ⚡️⚡️ there are 17 books and another coming out this year. I read the first 5 books

Angie H.

becky riordan said his abuse was toned down for the show “as its cruelty would be a lot more obvious on screen than on the page, and ‘this isn't supposed to be a horror show’.”

Marquis keel

I understand but I need them to feel the same hatred towards gabe that we do 😂 only thing the movie did better than the show imo I hated that actor 😂

Angie H.

my dream is getting to see the rest of the books adapted!! it’d be so fucking epic

jenny meresse

You should see the movies… they aren’t tooooo bad

Anonymous

Yeah, I mean in book 1 the fight scenes were short but had more explanations to them. I agree!!! I hope they continue the series because it just get better.

J Knight

The reason it looks like "something else" took the mom is because it was a book series for preteens and rick riordan didn't want to write blood. So everything that dies disintegrates lol. Kind of like how in Goosebumps RL Stine never wrote divorced parents.

Alyssa Dyson

Never saw any of the movies or this yet so first time watching with you guys 💜

szeth

Yes it would be amazing. This was my first series I ever read growing up it has a special place for me and was actually was what got me into reading fantasy. My one thing is just please disney... give this series a chance and do the whole thing lol. I love all the books but imo 3-5 absolutely cook and an adaption would be sooo good lol

szeth

@Erika yeah I should have clarified, for what this season was, it worked as someone who's already a fan. My concern is more about grabbing the tv show only watchers captivated and get the numbers up so disney is willing to put more into the show and give it a chance because there is some things that would look so cool adapted but I imagine to do it right it would be spendy on the effects side of things

Jon C

It has alot of potential, the pieces are there for the most part. The places where it falls flat just smack you in the face. If they polish it a little more then S2 has potential to be a banger

Amanda P

I honestly love that all of you are coming into it blind!! I actually really enjoyed the show and think it was well done, especially for a first season. Can't wait for more (wish we got it all at once 😂 but it's ok I can wait 7 more weeks haha)

Jenna

I cannot wait to get home and watch this and give y'all some information about this show and its universe! I am a HUGE Percy Jackson series fan and am sooo thankful y'all are watching it! Thank you!

J Knight

if you're a person who feels joy on a daily basis, you will find them quite fun

Xeph

Mostly for Oak here: many PJ fans dislike comparisons to Harry Potter, but like Harry Potter this book series progresses (about) a year at a time and gets more mature as it goes. (It's a 5 book initial series with some sequel series afterwards.) This season of the show is the first book, which makes it comparable to Sorcerer's Stone in terms of tone etc. Just something to keep in mind. In terms of the movies, there were two, the first book and the second book. The first movie was a terrible adaption of the book but kind of an okay movie on its own (it does have some fans.) The second movie is pretty much universally despised. Watching the movies first would have been bad because it would taint the story in some irreparable ways, especially a lot of the themes, and also it would spoil some stuff. It'll be fine to watch it after the show, just keep in mind that in pretty much every story difference between the show and the movie, the show is right.

Lis

My favorite fun fact about these books is that they originally started out as a bedtime story that the author, Rick Riordan, told his son who had ADHD and dyslexia and was only interested in Greek mythology. His son is also the reason why half-bloods have ADHD and dyslexia, Rick explained that he wanted to show all the kids with learning disabilities that being different isn’t always a bad thing but that it can be the very thing that makes you special and talented. He incorporated it into the books by explaining that halfbloods have ADHD because their brains are hardwired for battle and dyslexia because they are meant to understand Ancient Greek and not English.

Dora Dominguez

Hey guys some info on the origin of the series. Rick who is the author of the books originally created this as a "bedtime story" for his son who was diagnosed with Dyslexia and ADHD which is a trait that all Demigods have to some degree. He had read him the original myths but when Rick ran out of myths to tell his son he created this story which he eventually wrote down and shared with his students who told him to make it a book thus we got 5 original books, a sequel series and a whole universe from him that incorporate egyptian, norse, roman/greek myths. This series is held dear by many fans including me who read these books as a kid when i got diagnosed with ADHD. It was comforting and relatable to not just have one but so many characters that were "like" me

Roxane

Lol same. I didn'teven finish it. Initially, I didn't like some of the changes that were made, but the acting was subpar too imo. But ngl, I didn't say anything bcs most of the fans I've seen online are kinda blind to criticisms of the show. I'm almost surprised to find someone who was disappointed like me 🙈

Abigail.M

I love Tod in this show but I do have to say that it is suggested in the book that Tod abusive to Percy’s mom. I think that they took that out of show to add some levity to the show. I am actually reading the books through for the first time and I will say as you go they just get darker and darker. But I can’t wait for you guys to meet Annabeth and that amazing relationship between her and Percy.

Danna Radilla

OMGG You have no idea how much we wait for this, I first watch the movies and I went deep into Percy Jackson and I have all the books now (don’t watch the movies tho) and this series is just fantastic, they choose very very well the actors for Annabeth, Grover, Percy and Sally

Anonymous

OMG!!!! I,m so happy that you guys are watching this!!! The books are awesom!!! The series are verry good (the movies not so much jajaja). Enjoy

Mariah Lovegood

I am so happy all of you are watching the series and not watching the movies. If y'all must watch the movies, I recommend waiting to watch the second movie until after watching season 3 or 4 of the show because the second movie took things from books 3 and 4 so it will spoil things. It sounded like Answer thinks demigod is different from half-blood but they are the same just a different name for it. A little background. The author was a Greek history teacher and his kid was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia so he came up with the story of Percy as a way to help his kid see it as an advantage and not a disability. His kid encouraged him to write it and publish it to help others. It is written very fast paced to help grab the attention of young kids and those with ADHD. That being said, I can still reread them and find new lessons or themes in them.

EverShy

Completely agree with you! 1st movie was entertaining, it's what got me to read the books. 2nd is HORRIBLE

Jacquelyn

Yeah, I watched the whole show and I actual really enjoyed the last episode, but besides that the quality was all over the place and I was so disappointed in the changes and execution of the show 😭😭 I wanted to like it so bad, and maybe season 2 will be better, but for now… 😬😬

Alfounce Jolly

I think it's made in a very simplistic way, mostly for Children as the stories are written. But they have done a good job with the Sets and the Special Effects. Acting is the worst thing here, and I mean it's pretty bad, but young actors learn as they go just Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. I wish it had a little more apeal to adults.

terriblegenius

So excited that you guys are reacting to this! as a fan of the books from when they came out, I do love this adaptation and can't wait for y'all to finish the series. It was a great book series for young kids with any sort of learning disability (because I have dyslexia) cause Percy has ADHD and dyslexia. All half-bloods do. This is a very Greek story and while it is often compared to harry potter because of the ages of the characters it is very different. Also! There are no post credits in 7/8 episodes so at the end please stick around for the very end of the episode! Loved this you guys can't wait for next week!!!

terriblegenius

Episode 8 has something at the end...I don't think I made that clear reading that back now :)

Raquel Perodin

I’m so happy you are reacting to this, the books are amazing and they did a great gob with the series imo

Maddi Reich

As a 5th grade teacher I have loved my students, especially my boys who aren’t big readers, get so invested in the book series and the show! Rick Riordan wrote this book series based on the bedtime stories he used to tell his son who had ADHD and Dyslexia to make him see a hero who was like him.

Roxane

lol ikr?? I mean- I'm happy it's been made after the movies' fiasco but it's just not the same imo. Some of the changes just don't work and the acting didn't feel like it was an "embodiment" of the characters... but rather a "this is how _ was so that's how you have to be", so basically forced. 🥲🥲

C. J. Ramirez

You guys should watch the movies

Jenna

I would say that this series is similar to Harry Potter in the sense that they get more mature as time goes on and the characters age. In the first main series/arc, there are five books, with Percy starting at 12 years old and finishing when he is 16. The books are written for middle-grade ages, so yes some of the darker stuff is made into jokes sometimes (like the Minotaur in underwear) but it also tackles tough themes, similar to how ATLA would handle such things. Also, yes these episodes aren't too terribly long and I would never mind getting more than one episode each week. Comments about the movies: They are somewhat kind of entertaining, and you can obviously watch them if you're really that curious. but I did just want to say that they change quite a bit of significant plot points in the movies that do not at all fit or make sense with the overarching plot of the entire book series. So they're mediocre, bearable movies to watch, but they were absolutely disgusting as adaptations. Even the book author contacted the creators of the movies to tell them that based on the script they sent him that he knew the movies would flop if they did not make major changes. And the movies did flop of course. Now, the author was EXTREMELY involved with this tv series, being both a writer and producer, so the heart of the show aligns perfectly with the books, even if there were some slight changes made to fit it to the screen. As a book reader, it was so refreshing to watch after waiting all of these years and agonizing because such a good book series was trashed in such a terrible way by the movies. Thank you so much for your reaction, I can't wait for the rest of the episodes and your thoughts!!

Megan

I thought this was a great first episode. It's really hard to dislike the step-dad because he is so hilarious. I read the first two books as a kid but barely remember them so I can only compare the movie to the show. But I love both. I personally liked the first movie, 2 was okay but I honestly can't remember if I liked it or not. However, I'm a fan of the a lot of the cast from the film. I think if people went in not knowing it wasn't an original idea, they'd really like it. I know people hate on them but to each their own. Worth the watch just to say you watched them at least. Everyone I know trashing it is because they are the "it didn't 100% replicate the book so no one can like it" crowd. I get it. I hate when movies leave out important parts and change characters. But at least it didn't turn out like the live action ATLAB. I just take movies/shows for what they are, inspired by the original source. I go for entertainment and escapism. Not to assign myself a paper to write. Save that for Lit courses.

Raquel Perodin

I remember being so excited when I first read the books. Montauk is on Long Island and is very very close to home for me so when we would drive around I’d look for camp halfblood all the time and I remember being disappointed when I could never find it lol. I was also super excited because I hadn’t and Still haven’t heart stories taking place on Long Island.

JD Galbraith

I’m so happy you’ve started this. As a book reader I’m glad anyone is venturing into the world. I really enjoyed the show. I’d give it a 7/10. Good but not mind blowing like I was hoping. But they have a good start and can make this a big successful franchise. The biggest thing complaint, in my mind, is run times. I guess if that’s the biggest complaint it can be good. If the show added 10-15 min it would be so good. It would definitely help. Personally I thought the acting gets better as the show goes on. Hope y’all enjoy!

Abigail.M

Yup that is what happens when I multitask I guess 🙏😂😂. Thanks for correcting me!

Jenna

I would have to kindly disagree with this comment, because while I am a book fan and it does suck when movies stray from the source material, I believe these movies took it a step further. I can’t say much due to spoilers, but for one thing, the second movie brings aspects from the later book installments into the movie that changes the plot significantly. Another point is that the age-ing up of the character changes the entire plot of the books as well, and I cannot explain that further due to spoilers. I think those movies took it a step further and completely made making all five movies impossible. Such radical changes to the plot completely destroy the end point and final climax of the entire series and made that impossible to get to. I hope that maybe makes some sense even though I am trying to be spoiler-free. I don’t think the movies are terrible movies, but even without comparing them to the source material, the acting and motivation and writing is sub-par at best. I love Logan Lerman as much as the next pop culture fan, but those movies were no outstanding cinematic production of our time.

Alfounce Jolly

Oh, don't get me wrong all the HP cast did were great, but you can see its improvement as each movie was made. By the third one they seemed like masters of acting. And Emma was the best from the start, :)

Megan

I understand what you are saying and I do know movie 2 tried to pile everything in. They definitely shot themselves in the foot by aging them up. My critique is towards the die hard fans who trash movies because they can't see beyond the book, video game, etc. I honestly don't remember how I felt about the second movie but I enjoyed the first. Can't say if I still do now as an adult, it came out when I was in like 9th grade I think. But my point is, it could have been worse but if you go in not knowing it is based off anything, you go in with a wider point of view. I'm an avid reader so it is hard to see stuff prior to reading but when I can (life gets in the way) I prefer to read afterwards so I can enjoy the movie, show, etc as it's own thing. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a movie to put in the history books, it just isn't as bad as people are portraying. Which is why I used ATLAB as an example. I would say keeping characters young also doesn't work in movie/tv form because of the long filming schedules. You have growth spirts, voice changes, etc that usually results in recasting of characters (young Shawn in Psych) or it takes you out of the world like the Harry Potter movies. Towards the end, they looked like they were in their 30s. Same with Stranger Things. it is hard to find a balance but that's usually why they cast older actors because an adult aging 1-2 years is barely noticeable. A kid going from 12 to 14 is drastic.

Kayden

I thought Walker's acting was great in the final couple of episodes but he started off shaky in my opinion. I do agree the pacing felt off that and the lighting was my only issue. I actually liked all the changes they just made sense to me and, in my opinion, made the story alot better

Gandheezy

These books are really special to me and i'm glad they got another change on screen. I mostly enjoyed this show, it's a very close adaptation, but is lacking the heart that the books have. Still, better than the movies, so good deal.

Xeph

The water did pull Nancy, it's just subtle so as not to spoil anything. Go back and rewatch that scene carefully and you'll see it.

Maria

I'm so glad you're reacting to this. It's gonna be so interesting to see your reaction throughout the whole season, especially when you're going into this completely blind. It's gonna be such a fun ride. As someone who saw the movies like almost 9-10 years ago(and have read the books not so long ago) I did enjoy the first one although they weren't a good adaptations. And even if u look at it as something individual it still had some plot holes, they also changed so many origin greek mythology aspects to fit into their narrative. The movie took some parts of the book and instead of elevating those they made it more flat and bland. Them aging up the characters was already ruining the whole general plot of the first five books and not only that the characters had no personality. If u look at it it really was a generic hollywood movie which is kinda sad to say because the books have so much layered meaning to things and its overall plot. The show on the other hand while adapting it ofc they made some minor changes, but for the most part they r good changes, they only elevate what the books had gave and made it smarter I feel like, since the book was also written so long ago the author himself stated that he would like to fix some things. I think you are gonna enjoy it more and more as it's gonna progress and see the world building when it comes to this adaptation. I wish there was more runtime for the episodes tho for them to be able to expand on some things even more but given what they had I feel like they did a good job and the writing is sharp and smart. Excited to see your reaction to the rest of the episodes.

Cube Pylum

I'm really glad you guys didn't watch the movies first cause reactors comparing the show and the movie nonstop has made me quit watching reactions, the movies are the least faithful book adaptation I've seen and completely ignored the author when he tried to help, the show is much more faithful to the books but still some changes that I mostly thing were good changes and the author was very active in the making of this show.

Cube Pylum

Demigod and halfblood mean the exact same thing

Anonymous

I don't care what anyone says you guys should watch the movies after this just bc its not 100% based off the books does not mean they were bad movies

Anonymous

That's exactly what happened with Charlie and the chocolate factory but people still loved the 1971 even it was a horrible adaptation and the directors also ignored the authors wishes that's why I still like the movies

Jack's World

They were using all the names & likeness from the source material & proceeded to butcher it all & yeah, the CGI in them was horrendous lol. If the crew want to watch it for a laugh & nothing serious, go for it but it is an incomplete story & franchise. Imagine the Harry Potter Series with the first film taking some of the story from book one, then the following film taking everything from the rest & cramming it into one film lmaooo

Anonymous

Opinions you have your I have mine it’s fine to be different

Jack's World

Yeah this series released it's first book in 2005 so it was catering to a similar audience as HP but one that favored Greek Mythology over magic in a sense. Also, this related heavily towards kids with ADHD/ADD, Dyslexia, and people that are neurodivergent in general like myself. It's one of the few book series I read through fully, and in total, there are around 20 books in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians Universe. I believe this show will focus on the first 5 books as a bracketed story & possibly move into spin-offs depending on the interest levels by the time they wrap Season 5

Maria

A little fun fact about the titles of the episodes, Idk if anyone mentioned this already, but they r named after some chapters from the book.

Tamara Kohek

I enjoyed this season. It wasn't perfect. Definitely things they could improve for season 2. But still a lot of good moments. I hope you guys react to Ted lasso once you get a chance. One of my favorite series of all time. Its like a warm blanket🥰

Sayalee Mylavarapu

I would say the show goes up and down but it’s still great and way better than the movies cause they follow the books more too

Lori Mallory

The author of the books and who was heavily involved in the making of this show did his best to separate him and his books and this show from the movies. Compared to the books the movies are awful. Even the Author of the books refused to watch the movies that were "based" on his works. I will say that if u watch the movies and in your mind separate it completely from everything u know it helps... Looking at the movies from a stand alone pov makes it ok to watch. But they are not accurate at all to what it was meant to be. This TV series is basically the redemption all fans of the books have wanted for years.

romaiiiii

Read the books as a kid, disappointed with the movies... I hope this goes better than last time.

Alex2882

This this aged well, I would never imagine that the movies were going to be better than the show…

Lori Mallory

The movies are alright by themselves. But the series is more intune with the books. The main reason why so many book fans love the series and look down on the movies ... accuracy.
