Hamilton brings the electrifying energy and revolutionary spirit of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway sensation right to Badd Medicine. From the opening notes to the final curtain, "Hamilton" takes us on a riveting journey through the life of Alexander Hamilton. The brilliance of Lin-Manuel Miranda's writing and performance is just fantastic.

What sets this production apart is its innovative use of hip-hop and rap, infusing new life into the historical narrative. The ensemble cast, led by Miranda himself, delivers powerhouse performances that breathe life into the characters, making them feel contemporary and relatable. The camera work brilliantly captures the stage performances, providing close-ups that offer a unique perspective and showcase the actors' emotions.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's portrayal of Alexander Hamilton is nothing short of spectacular, and the chemistry among the cast members elevates the production to new heights. Additionally, standout performances by Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, and Daveed Diggs as Thomas Jefferson add layers to the narrative.

Whether you're a musical theater enthusiast or a newcomer, this cinematic adaptation is a must-watch. "Hamilton" not only lives up to the hype but surpasses expectations. If you haven't seen it, we highly recommend giving it a watch.

terriblegenius

Cat

It’s Here OMG I love this musical so much that I know every words to every song and to see you guys react to something that been on repeat of my Spotify playlists makes my day and makes me want to cry.🥹😆😆😁 Thank you guys so much

Jennifer K

It is time.

Plebcy

time to grab a snack

Jeff K

Yeeeeeees. Guys, do yourselves a favor and look up when Lin went to a White House event and told the crowd he was working on a concept about Hamilton, and performed the main song in front of a room full of people who thought he was at least half joking. Obama had him and the members of the cast come back years later after the play had become the smash that it still is, and was like, "People in the room were laughing, but obviously, Lin had by far the last laugh" or something like that. Like, half the people in the room seemed to think it was a gag. Well worth a watch. It's a short video that's readily available on YouTube.

Sharpgirl

I wish you much success in your future YouTube copyright edit! May the editing robots leave you alone. Blessings 🙏

Jeff K

We believe in Diamond Dave and the rest of the folks you have doing your edits!

sassycelt

Yay! Can’t wait to watch. This and Rent are a few of my go to musicals to watch.

Jeff K

Leslie Odom is so fucking good, by the way. That voice is INCREDIBLE.

Kay

Pray for whoever has to edit this to avoid copyright infringement! I’m so excited to watch the full reaction!!

우영팬

I'm at work right now but I'll be watching this when I get home! 🎉🎉

Mikayla Pazzi

I AM SO READY!!!! ive been looking forward to this since the post when i saw yall would react to it!!

Trey Nicholson

Oh, we're here fellas!! Haven't watched the reaction yet, but it's gonna be amazing I have no doubt! Many of my friends poured their hearts into making this show!!

Mikayla Pazzi

you dont understand how excited i am about this reaction. hamilton is my fav musicsl. i actually piss my mom off with o=how often i still listen and sing along to the soundtrack. thank youuu!

Jeff K

Sorry to spam the comments guys... just got to y'all talking about some of the camera work, one thing they did here was, in addition to filming a full performance, for all of the closeups and so forth, they went back and filmed those separately in a closed theater because, obviously, they couldn't have cameras on stage or blocking the crowd. So it's actually a mix of the live performance and a privately filmed version.

C. J. Ramirez

This is supposed to be similar to the SOA storyline with the family drama so imma have to watch this

Ana

Omg I can't wait till I get off. This is the one I've been waiting for years 🖤🖤🖤

Love10 ❤️

Omg 😱😱😱😳😳 OMG I JUST GOT OFF WORK!!!!!! LEEETTTTTSSSS GOOOOOOOOOOO

Caitlin Green

Yaaaaaassssss 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 can’t wait to get home to watch this one! You guys should check out the Disney movie Encanto! Lin-Manuel Miranda also wrote it!

Jenna

SO EXCITED

emma rose

so random but cool to me: the actress who played Angelia (Renee Elise Goldsbery, who won a Tony for playing this role!) performed at my university's arts benefit gala and I had the chance to be one of her backup singers! She is actually one of the coolest and down to earth people I've ever met.

Tamara Kohek

OMG I love this musical! I remember putting of watching it myself because of the hype, and I thought I would be disapointed. It was even better than I thought ☺️I listen to the album on Spotify on repeat. I've been having a really bad day, so this reaction came at the perfect time ❤️

Jennifer K

Something you might enjoy is listening to the soundtrack on a streaming service - it's all there, seeing yes as the entire play is music! It's a great way to brush up in between watching it again! Then, when you re-watch sometime, keep an eye out for the woman who plays "the Bullet," the literal bullet from Burr's gun in the end; she's in the entire play as that character.

Kyra Brown

Yessss we stan this masterpiece that is Hamilton baby

Jennifer K

My interpretation (and biggest reason I love the play) is that it's called "Hamilton" not "Alexander Hamilton," and for a big reason: Eliza. Quote, "Best of wives and best of women." There are theories related to that as to why he—perhaps Lin the writer, not Alexander—walked Eliza to the audience and had her gasp at the end. Thanks for a great reaction guys!

Amanda Milholland

I can’t tell you how happy it made me to see Oak have his “musical awakening” 🤣 I totally get it too — when we first got together, my husband was very much a “ehhhh, musicals aren’t my thing” person. But now? There are several that he loves! (Including Hamilton, of course!) I think what’s important to remember is that there are so many musicals out there that you aren’t gonna love every single one (I certainly don’t!) But there are some real gems out there! In the Heights is another musical by Lin Manuel Miranda that I love. And I know The Answer mentioned Wicked… that one is near and dear to my heart (and is actually my husband’s favorite! Even over Hamilton!)

Anthony Velasquez

Lin Manuel Miranda who played Hamilton wrote all the songs for Hamilton and has wrote songs for many other projects as well another one his plays In The Heights which has been made into a movie( hoping maybe you guys check out In the Heights) also wrote songs for Moana and Encanto

Gwyn

I had been waiting for this to post ALL day!! So good! Phantom of the Opera got mentioned afterwards and if you guys do decide to branch out and do some more musicals I highly recommend going to Prime and renting the Royal Albert Hall 25th anniversary performance. It's amazing and has by far my favorite cast for that show!

J Knight

This is why you guys need to watch Starkid's (harry potter musical people) musical Twisted. Oak would be bawling his eyes out at halftime I know it 🤣

Edie

as youve loved so many lin manuel miranda musicals (this, encanto ect) you should absolutely watch in the heights (starring the guy who played laurens and phillp) or tick tick boom (starring andrew garfield and featuring a few hamilton cast cameos) they are both so so great!!!

Jessie

So happy you guys watched this! I'm in the end discussion now— to answer Oak's questions about whether all musicals are like this— I've only seen a handful in my life as well but the consensus is that this really is a high bar. it's certainly my favorite. Also want to add (sorry if you're getting this a lot), Lin Manuel Miranda, who starred in and wrote the music for this, blew up after Hamilton's success and went on to do the music for Moana and then Encanto. So excited you guys watched this! EDIT: Wait, you guys are watching cats?!! 😂😂😂

Kay

This was amazing, glad you all loved it! I’m hoping Les Miserables is on the list at some point!

Dora Dominguez

I would definitely recommend Newsies, Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables!!!!! Also loved to see Oak's musical awakening lol it was the highlight and a joy for me to see!!!

Trey Nicholson

I’m a lighting designer and programmer in the NY and New England area. This show is one of the most technically specific shows on Broadway! It has about 854 lighting cues, around 600 lights roughly. The late Howell Binkley did the lighting design along with his amazing team! I’ll leave some more fact drops to others for now, but for some more live musicals that are available, I would HIGHLY recommend Come From Away, based on the stories of the 38 planes that were unexpectedly grounded in Gander, Newfoundland during 9/11

Michele

Love Hamilton! You should watch Rent! Taye Diggs is in it.

Olivia Allison

This made me so happy to watch! Please do Les Miserables, The Greatest Showman, or Hairspray

Trey Nicholson

As well as Waitress which just came out. She Loves Me, Memphis, Holiday Inn, Rent on Broadway, Newsies, Kinky Boots, 42nd Street, and the SpongeBob Musical are all ones that I would recommend

Kay

Also - seeing as you mentioned Cats, if you’re actually serious about watching it: I have to recommend the 1998 stage-shot version (just like Hamilton is the stage version) over the 2019 film. Other musicals I’d recommend: Les Miserables (another fully sung-through musical and widely regarded as one of the best of all time), Phantom of the Opera, Rent, Chicago, West Side Story, Moulin Rouge, The Greatest Showman, La La Land, Dear Evan Hansen.

Xeph

Been really excited for this. You were commenting on the fact that Hamilton is almost entirely songs, that is fairly unusual in musicals and it actually makes Hamilton an opera or very nearly one, as opposed to a musical, but unlike most operas they still had dialogue just in the form of rap instead of purely spoken. (Also probably avoid the Cats movie, it's pretty hated)

Leigh Marx

This is definitely up there on the list of the best musicals of all time if not at the top. Not all of them reach this level, but there are several that do. Rent is a great one and you can watch both the stage version (which also has the same girl that played Angelica in this) and the movie version. Also Newsies is a great one to watch the stage version and it has the same history aspect.

Anthony Barron

Idk if moulin rouge is a musical but it is also good if u haven’t watched it wicked is coming out soon as a movie might have to wait for that

Slick447

Oak, I honestly felt the same way about musicals for a while. The one that convinced me to give them a try? Little Shop of Horrors. Can't recommend enough! It's got comedy, it's got suspense, great songs, and it's got some legends in it like Steve Martin & Rick Moranis. If you guys are looking to try out more musicals, I think you'll enjoy this one. Also, no matter what anyone says, don't watch the recent Cats movie. Musical lovers and haters alike don't go near that film. Great reaction guys! I think this video is going to give you a new boost.

Jennifer Hamilton

I was waiting for this one!! I think the pace of rap really grabs and keeps your attention through the whole musical, it's so unique! I would love to see your reaction to the 2012 movie version of Les Miserables since it is one of the rare movie musicals with live vocals. (I know musicals are a youtube copyright nightmare though so, thanks for this one!!)

Annie

Don't watch Cats haha

Annie

Something entirely different that I think you would love is The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals. It's by Starkid (the ones who did the Potter musical you watched) and it's an original script. Horror/comedy. And it's more recent too so way better sound and camera work!

Lauren B

I could not have clicked on this faster. I’m at intermission and had to pause to recommend 2 book series around this place/time period that I think you guys will love! ( they’re ones I found after watching Hamilton and wanting to dive more into the time period and battles): 1. Mike Wallace’s Gotham (2 part series on the history of NY) and 2. Nathaniel Philbrick’s American Revolution Series (3 parts, “Bunker Hill”, “Valiant Ambition”, and “in the hurricane’s Eye”. Also, as I commented earlier: as haymitch told katniss — you could live a hundred lifetimes and never deserve that boy —- ditto for Hamilton re Eliza

Xeph

Seconded for The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals by Starkid

Marla I.

My favorite musical, I am so excited.

Kristine

ooh so glad you're reacting to this! One of my fav musicals

Tori Jeri

i think a good way to look at musicals is that it’s another medium for story telling just like film, tv, animation, etc. is. There’s as many genres in musical theater as there are in film. ‘Les Mis’ is nothing like ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘Hamilton’ is nothing like ‘Heathers’. Just like ‘Harry Potter’ is nothing like ‘The Notebook’ or ‘Legally Blonde’.

Tori Jeri

I don’t blame you for having reservations about musicals because the overall opinion of them in society isn’t positive, but as a person who loves all forms of story telling, I love musicals because of the amount of emotion and soul they’re able to show in song that can also be a way to move the story along. It takes a lot of skill to master that. I think the ‘Tick Tick Boom’ movie which is actually directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is a good starting point when getting into movie musicals. There are lots of duds when people adapt musicals into film, like cats or Into the Woods (in my opinion). But there are big wins like ‘Tick Tick Boom’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Hairspray’, and i’d even say the ‘In the Heights’ movie is a hit. Here’s to hoping the ‘Wicked’ movies are good when they come out later this year🥂

Lily

Oh man!!! Time to get “My Shot” stuck in my head for the next month !!!!!

Magda Ch

This was amazing!! Please can you watch Tick, Tick... Boom! now? Was directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Andrew Garfield was nominated for best actor for the role in this movie :)

Dy'Nasha

Thank you for the great ride! I love this musical so bad man. Its so undeniably good, I consume the songs off and on. Oak was definitely right, seeing it live would be a different experience with the different cast ensembles , and its so interesting how the actors would both take on the role uniquely. Musicals are definitely what you make it, but they all tend to be good in their own way. I only seen School of Rock, Matilda, and Mean Girls live but they were all in their own lane.

Erin Kimball

Omg, I didn't even think of Hairspray! SECONDED, hard, you guys would love Hairspray.

Brianna

I see everyone is commenting their favorite musicals lol. Still highly recommend Hairspray with John Travolta. But also Chicago (2002) the film is very good and Catherine Zeta-Jones won an Oscar for her role AND the movie won the Oscar for best picture. And Chicago is set during 1924 and Hairspray 1962 so both have a historical aspect.

Camila Cruz

I loved that you watched Hamilton!! I love the play. If you want to see more work from Lin-Manuel Miranda the movie In the Heights, is the first play here wrote that turn in a movie! Lin-Manuel Mirada wrote the songs from Encanto and Moanam, another movie from Disney. I love your channel and love watching your reaction. Love from Brazil

Phillipa

im so happy you've finally seen hamilton! ive loved this musical for so long and seeing people react to it is my favourite thing because watching people falling in love with it is incredible. for oak! if you want to see it live, hamilton has several touring companies in different cities across the country if you do want more of christopher jackson singing and lin's incredible musical writing i would check out moana. christopher jackson sings the chiefs songs and lin sings in some songs as well as wrote the songs at the same time as performing hamilton every night!

Bri

I loved rewatching this with ya'll! Seeing Eliza, Phillipa Soo, again reminded me of a movie recommendation!! There's an animated Netflix movie called Over The Moon that she stars and sings in! The movie is beautiful, me and my toddler were obsessed with it when it came out. I think ya'll would love it, and I feel like it's underrated given it released on Netflix and not by one of the bigger animation studios.

Eli Spring

Also don't forget... these are professional actors doing this show. Most of them, if not all, did this show 8 times a week for months on end- if not years! :)

Dannielle

The entire cast is incredible but Burr, Leslie Odom Jr is spectacular. His performance completely draws you in, he's magnetic.

Wattyone1

Awesome reaction loved watching it with you guys. Please do 25th year anniversary of Les Miserables, which has some faces in it you may recognise.

Tanisha Jones

I'm chomping at the bit to watch this when I get home! There's so many little hidden gems and nuances that you literally have to watch this musical 4 or 5 times just to catch everything! And I've got to say I'm darn jealous of Answers wife! To say you've seen the original broadway cast live in NYC is a flex if I've ever heard one.

Plebcy

Oak's reaction to Hamilton felt very similar to his Harry Potter reactions. Being a skeptic of musicals at first is usually everyone's first reaction. I know I didn't enjoy musicals at first, but after seeing Hamilton, I was hooked. Lin's songwriting skills are immaculate. He did the songs for multiple Disney movies (Moana, Encanto, etc.) and also did "In The Heights," which you should watch next. Also...you will be greatly disappointed if you watch Cats. I'll just put it that way... 😂

Lolilie

I'm so here for Oak's musical awakening! I'd love it if you considered watching Spielberg's West Side Story. Ariana de Bose, who played "The Bullet" in Hamilton, won an Oscar for her performance in WSS. Also, stars Rachel Zegler from Hungers Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Tick Tick Boom, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is a great watch. In the Heights and Les Miserables are wonderful. And obviously, I cannot wait for Jon Chu's Wicked film to come out. The show is fantastic. Try to catch Book of Mormon when it comes your way, and I highly recommend Moulin Rouge! The Musical. Not to be a weird stalker, but the Moulin Rouge touring show will be in Wisconsin in May and June. The production won 10 Tonys, including Best Musical. Thank you for the great reaction, even if it's going to be a beast to edit!

Mister Lou

This was Awesome, Amazing And everything in between! I wonder when you guys decided to react to this? I wish I could've been "In The Room Where It Happened, The Room Where It Happened, The ROOM WHERE IT HAPPENED...!" Might I suggest Johnny Depp's Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber on Fleet Street?

kelly

Glad you guys enjoyed Hamilton! If you guys are looking to do more musicals, Tick Tick Boom! is a good option as Lin Manuel Miranda also worked on it.

Victoria E (vickster5001)

I loved watching this again with you! I’m lucky to live in London in the uk so I have it here and you’ve inspired me to book another ticket as it’s been a few years since I last saw it live! It’s insane the music, lyrics & book were all from one man’s brain & he also took on the lead role! Musicals do vary in quality and different ones appeal to different people, but this one is superb. My favourite one is Groundhog Day (lyrics by Tim Minchin) and I didn’t love the film, but I love the musical. It’s so clever and original. If you ever get a chance to see that, do it! I’m also a Les Miserables fan as the songs and vocals always blow me away. Approach the Cats film with caution. A recording of the stage show is a wider choice.

Megan Burland

yeeees so happy to see you guys get into this! should definitely do a few more les miserables hairspray are prolly the ones i would recommend the most

Ali Hooper

OAK! If you like this musical you would also LOVE "Come From Away" which they have also filmed and put on streaming sites. I believe it is on AppleTV right now. Watch it in your own time or on the channel, either way, I know you will enjoy it. I won't say much about it other than the general story it was based on. Basically, the story follows this small island on 9/11 after multiple planes are commanded to do an emergency landing there, meaning there are thousands of new visitors the town must take care of. It's based off the true story and it's so inspiring. The songs are great too and it does a similar thing to Hamilton in that actors will play multiple characters, but it isn't music the ENTIRE time.

Ana

Yes I agree but they might as well do the movie too. I'll take the 10 anniversary too. I just Les Mis last year it was my first show ever. And I loved it

Ana

Please do Into the woods the original Broadway cast is in it. It's sooooo underrated it's one of my fav musicals. Also Rent the movie it's soooo good

Elvira Heredia

honestly I was bit nervous about your reaction to a musical but after your reaction to the first number I was "okay, we´re gooood". Now the second phase after watching the play is download the soundtrack and annoy everyone XD

J Knight

seconded. johnny depp and helena bonham were great here! so much passion!

Julia Maia

This musical just means everything to me. I first listened to the Original Broadway Cast Recording album before I ever saw the musical. I fell madly in love with the story and these characters. I remember when the film came out on Disney+ and how magical it was to finally watch it. I made everyone I know watch it and I am proud to say I have successfully converted them and they all love Hamilton. One of my favorite things is to watch people fall in love with it and your reaction was just incredible. So nice to see you guys on the other side 🤎

Madison RaeAnn Apitz

This is something I’ve been waiting for! Fantastic show, it’s truly mind blowing. I’d love to see you guys react to more musicals on the channel!

Noah Maughan

As someone who also once thought musicals were not for me, I will say there a many great musicals out there. Not many as good as Hamilton, which is a masterpiece, but still very good. Book of Mormon is great, though it is only available on stage. Someone suggested watching Hairspray. That was the first musical to make me think musicals can actually be quite good, so I would agree with them on that one.

Hailey

Finally home from work, let's goooo!!!! Edit: Firstly my recommendation is In the Heights movie like many others. Secondly I thought I'd drop some cool facts haha So at the very in of the credits (0:33) in the special thanks section, Lin included all the places he wrote Hamilton. Hamilton came about because Lin read a book about Alexander Hamilton while on vacation. He spent 7 years researching and workshopping the play before its Broadway debut in 2015. Lastly, you guys should check out the original versions of some songs for funnsies! All can be found on Youtube First Burn ‘Lin-Manuel Miranda performing cut John Adams Rap from Hamilton‘ ‘Dear Theodosia but both verses are sung simultaneously‘

Vanished

listen i grew up on the cats musical recording, that was my thing growing up so if you do watch cats please watch that and not the remake

JiaHailstorm

Watched this late last night and this reaction DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Had a blast watching it!

Megan Goodwin

Suggestion if you're interested in watching more musicals! Sweeney Todd!!

Jeremy Burch

I would recommend Rent, The Greatest Showman. I would also recommend In The Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music and lyrics for that as well and Tick, Tick... Boom! which is about the person who made Rent, it's also the feature directorial debut of Lin-Manuel Miranda. Also, more StarKid shows like Twisted, The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals and others.

Patrick Rivera

i dont know if someone has already mentioned it, but I'd love for you to react to The Color Purple movie musical that came out december 2023. It's a really good adaptation of the musical and the original movie! Other musicals I'd like you to see: Rent Les Miserables Anna and the Apocalypse (yep, its a Zombie musical but so good) Sweeney Todd Tick, Tick... Boom! and maybe possibly Wicked when it comes out this December :)

Jeff K

Had to pause yesterday so just now finishing up, but fucking hell... Leslie Odom's performance of "Room Where it Happens" is hands down one of the best vocal performances I've ever seen/heard. Just spectacular.

Marla I.

If you guys want to expand and react to another official recording of an amazing musical play, I suggest you guys watch "Come from Away". It is on Apple TV.

Harlee M

I forgot about Chicago! So great! They’d love both of these

Sarah

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. ❤️ Seeing this reminded me that I've been hoping and praying you guys will react to that. 😆 It is the hets musical I've seen. Close runners-up would be the 2007 Hairspray and the 2021 Cyrano. I'd love to see reactions for all 3 but you guys definitely need to do The Greatest Showman.

Jeff K

I've never watched the credits or looked into the ensemble, but holy shit, Ariana DeBose was part of the ensemble?! I had absolutely no idea. For the guys: she recently won an Oscar for her performance in the West Side Story remake that Spielberg did. (On that note: you guys should check out West Side Story; it's fantastic. I'd go with the original, but the remake is very good as well.) Also, the timing makes it a bummer but, since Oak said they're not far from Chicago: the Broadway touring company for Hamilton is in Chicago right now... but tomorrow is their last day there, unfortunately.

Jeff K

Definitely second Les Mis, in particular. A few years ago, my wife got tickets to a live performance that we learned was a reimagining set in a dystopian future down here in Dallas, so I was skeptical but holy shit, it was AMAZING. The movie is obviously very good, too; I think the guys would appreciate seeing what an amazing set of pipes Hugh Jackman has.

Jeff K

Well of course with a surname like that you were anticipating this one... hahaha

Jeff K

Also, I hope they check out the YouTube video of Lin listening/reacting to Weird Al's Hamilton song for the first time. It's pure joy. (Lin also has a cameo in Al's movie "Weird" which, obviously, stars Harry Potter himself as Al.)

Jeff K

It's pretty perfect that they dropped the Encanto YT cut immediately after posting this, too.

Lesley Graham

What's fun is that you've already heard Lin Manuel Miranda's music in Moana and Encanto

Lesley Graham

Oh, and on rewatch + some history knowledge you'll find some lines dig deeper. Like Burr telling his daughter she will blow them all away; she died in a storm.

Jeff K

Oh one more thing for you guys: it's not a musical but if you want more from the dude who plays King George (Jonathan Groff), he was the star of David Fincher's Netflix series "Mindhunters." It's an extremely dark show about the origin of the FBI's behavioral science unit, through interviews with serial killers and investigations into them, etc. It's excellent. But yeah... a huge departure from King George.

Jennifer Redmond

Her official role is “the bullet”. You see her in the duel between Hamilton and Burr and also when Hamilton was writing letters for Washington about what they needed on the field. She’s also one of the girls Philip flirts with ❤️

Jennifer Redmond

Come from away is an amazing show (Apple plus right now), Tick Tick Boom (it’s got Andrew Garfield!), and RENT are all great ones! Please skip cats, you’re gonna be disappointed

Rocco Labate

Can you please react to the Prison Break Tv Series?

Ash Jamil

The greatest showman is great as well!!! A beautiful musical I feel like y’all would loveeee

bella

Now do In the Heights ;-D

Roxanne LIL CRIP Kemmerer

Had fun seeing this again, GREAT reaction! This is off subject but I'm so curious if y'all have caught the trailer for the new Jordan Peele movie Monkey Man?

Jimmy Wise

I'll add to the growing chorus of recommendations for Come From Away on AppleTV+, it's one of my top 3 favorite musicals of all time (and i'm a Broadway fanatic who has seen dozens of shows across the last 10 years thanks to national tours)

V

“Tick, Tick, Boom!” Is a must watch now. Directed by Lin Manuel Miranda and starring Andrew Garfield. It’s another mind blowingly great movie that you would not expect. I think it is on Netflix. 🤩🤯❤️

WillyShakes

I’m so glad you guys caught it, but because the music never stops, Hamilton is technically an opera not a musical

Abigail.M

You guys should really watch dead even hansen. Not on the level of this but it amazing and the lessons and character mistakes are so good. Also I would really like y’all to watch the waitress, I think that would be super interesting! Anyways great reaction and can’t wait to see what musical you guys do next

Ari.g

Ooo boy, get ready for a long comment. Fantastic reaction guys! I have so much to say - especially if this may be the first domino in a line of musical reactions (crossing my fingers!) I'll start off by saying that yes, Hamilton sets up a very high bar. Not even because it is such an amazingly written, directed, and choreographed show - but also because it is one of a kind. I am a lover of musicals, and even though hamilton isnt even in my top three - I have never seen anything like it before or since. So as you go on this journey, probably dont expect the same experience! That being said, most of what you guys loved - that is, the staging (a genuine surprise, since most people take that art form for granted!), choreography, and lyrical depth - are definitely things found in most musical shows. As for future recommendations - there are some fantastic ones in the comments that youll probably see pop up quite a few times. I personally think "in the heights" is a great starting point - simply because its another Lin written production, however a bit more traditional to other musical movies, which might help a transition in your expectations in what other musicals may bring to the table. Other great movie musicals: The Greatest Showman (fantastic songs and gorgeous, magical visuals), Hairspray (costuming is beautiful and the songs are incredibly catchy), and Tick Tick Boom (another lin masterpiece). A personal favourite of mine is Chicago. Not as popular as some, probably due to peoples prejudice of both jazz and musicals - but the cinematography and directing is some of the best ive seen in any movie period, and brings another one of a kind experience. Was also the last musical to win Best Picture. Finally - if you want to see some more proshots (that is, professional shootings of the theatre productions as opposed to movie directed musicals) like Hamilton, i'd recommend Legally Blonde (Hilarious, and can be found free on youtube - plus, i know you guys liked the movie!), Waitress (which just came out), and pretty much any StarKid musical if you want to continue down that journey!

Laura Scott

This is one of the excellent things about Hamilton! It opens people’s minds to the idea of musicals, which is fantastic! For recommendations (though I’m sure you have plenty at this point), Rent - called a Rock Opera, it changed the idea of what a musical could be in the mid 90s. The movie soundtrack was produced by the same person who made Green Day’s American Idiot album, so yeah, amazing. Tick Tick Boom - semi autobiography of the writer/composer of Rent. Andrew Garfield shines in this one. Chicago - jazz era music, one of the best film adaptations of a musical of all time.

Izzy Rocha

You should definitely check out In The Heights! It was written by Lin Manuel Miranda too.

Slick447

Seconded for "Tick, Tick, Boom". It is the only movie that I've ever begun on a plane and then rushed home to finish after landing. Andrew is fantastic in it.

Langley Newman

I’m so glad y’all finally reacted to this!! It was such a great reaction and I’m glad yall enjoyed it!! Lin has SUCH a talent with his writing and everyone in the show is fantastic. Hope to see more musicals, but honestly this was my #1 movie I wanted to see y’all react to so I am very satisfied!😂 Thanks for everything yall do!

Stacey Robinson

You guys should watch the behind-the-scenes or some interviews I think they have some on Disney plus of Hamilton

Jannik M

PLEASE watch In the Heights, Tick Tick Boom and other musical movies like "west side story", "Dear Evan Hansen" or "La La Land" next! + The actor of King George is in the netflix show mindhunter aswell, which is pretty great and also deserves to be reacted to by you guys

There's a reason why musical theatre is my favorite art form. You get music, dance, acting, sets/props, and costumes all at the same time. Plus, if they mess up, they can't just stop and start over, they improvise and power through which takes great skill and talent. This is definitely one of my top 5 favorite musicals.

Oak, the best place to start when it comes to musicals are the popular and award-winning ones. Like, Wicked, Lion King, Hadestown, In the Heights, etc.

2024-02-01 23:22:47 Oh, I am so pleased you watched this and enjoyed it! I could tell you were all stunned by the show initially, and then fell into it. 🧡 It was much the same for hubbie and I when we first saw it (like so many others, via streaming during lockdowns) — actually, we started watching it about 9pm one evening, finished midnight-ish, and then just hit the watch again button. 🤣 It’s currently live in our nearest town (touring the UK) and we’ve seen it three times already with two more shows booked. 😅 I am sure you’ve had lots of facts from others in the comments but here are a few from me: — Jonathan Groff (King George III, the “mad” king) also voices Kristoff and Sven in Frozen and Frozen II. As Hamilton progresses, the King gradually slides into the madness which troubled much of his later years. — Eliza sings her parts, because she, out of all the cast, has the time to sing. She outlives everyone. She isn’t “running out of time”. 😭 As it was, her son John Church Hamilton finished the compilation of Alexander’s writings after her death, and went on to write several works about his father. — Based on the ending, there is a question as to which Hamilton the musical is named for: Alexander — or Eliza, given how she collates and makes sense of her husband’s works for the generations to follow. — Daveed Digs (Lafayette/Jefferson) has insane skills, and I believe this was his first Broadway role, for which he won a Tony. He holds the record for the fastest rap on Broadway at around 6.3 words per second (“Guns n Ships”), though he can rap much faster. He is also a member of rap group clipping. — Renée Elise Goldsberry (Angelia) raps the second-fastest rap in Hamilton, during “Satisfied”, at 5 words per second. Goldsberry came to auditions late and wanted the role so much she learnt the whole song — including the rap — overnight, the night before her audition. It won her the Tony. — Lin-Manuel plays with the timeline during the play to best suit the narrative of its events, so it’s a fictionalised account (rather than historical, though many things are accurate). One of my favourite moments of this timeline manipulation is in “Take a Break”, after Angelica arrives: Eliza: Alexander, come downstairs. Angelica's arriving today! [a beat] Angelica! Angelica: Eliza! Alexander: [a beat] … The Schuyler Sisters. The beat before Alexander sings is just enough for “and Peggy”, but in this narrative, she’s already died. The space is left just for her memory, hence the poignancy to Alexander’s line. — My favourite song is “It’s Quiet Uptown”. It proved a brutal song for many of the cast and crew: choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler found it challenging to choreograph because his young daughter was battling leukaemia at the time (she survived); Oskar Eustis, the artistic director of the Public Theater, where Hamilton was created, lost his son during the off-Broadway run; and Renée-Elise Goldsberry, the narrator of this song, had suffered a prior miscarriage. — Christopher Jackson’s George Washington bows his head during Eliza’s lyrics, “I speak out against slavery” during “Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story”, because Washington did in fact, own slaves. His bowed head acknowledges this fact, though not all Washingtons after him do this. — In “I Know Him”, King George III sings, “next to Washington they all look small” in a clever double meaning: both Washington’s large shoes left to fill, and that fact that Washington appears on the largest coin in common US currency, a nod to Alexander being the first Treasury secretary of America. Thank you for a great reaction, guys, and I look forward to seeing more from you all in the future! 💪🏻

I think you guys will enjoy reacting to Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It's a movie adaptation of the Broadway musical. It stars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter; directed by Tim Burton.

Basak

in the heights is so great too I hope you guys react to that

I love this channel so much! I love all the people involved but man do I love seeing Oak change his mind and get excited about the things I love. I think he is just a friend I haven't met yet. First watched the Hunger Games reactions which reference Potter so I went back and watched them. I love it so much I become a patron just to watch the full reactions. I have been a musical lover about as long as I have been a Potter Head. Live musicals are pricey but subscribing to the whole season gives you the best price (my theater it's 1/2 the price) and I have seen musicals I wouldn't have picked individually that I have loved so much thanks to subscribing. All musicals have amazing lessons that Oak should enjoy exploring but here is some recommendations. Wicked and Loin King are some of the longest running musicals so clearly they are amazing. Others I love a lot Hadestown (Greek mythology with NOLA jazz style music), Come From Away (heartwarming story about 9/11 that lives rent free in my head), Dear Evan Hansen (with Ben Platt from Pitch Perfect), Waitress (music by Sara Bareilles), Book of Mormon (writers from South Park), Miss Saigon (set in the Vietnam war), of course Oak has to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (going to Chicago soon I believe), oh Les Miserable is also historical.

I'm so happy y'all enjoyed this one! Lin-Manuel Miranda is so, so talented. He wrote a lot of the music for Moana and Encanto! He's the mind behind "We Don't Talk About Bruno" too.

I just checked your Patreon to see if you were ahead on Chernobyl since that was something I would consider becoming a patron for... And then I saw that you reacted to Hamilton. I joined on the spot, had dinner, and settled down to watch the show with you. Incredible watch - absolutely worth it! I could talk about this show forever, but for newcomers to musicals I would recommend In The Heights (mandatory since it's written by Lin as well and stars some Hamilton cast members), Chicago (Oscar-winner, and deservedly so), and Hairspray (it has Christopher Walken if that sweetens the pot). There are many more (movie) musicals worth watching, but those are highlights that I think you'd really enjoy. Don't watch Cats - it'll put you off musicals forever. (Or do watch it, but come prepared with a drinking game. You'd need it.)

Annabellae Priestly

I came here for Encanto, but this is even better!

Kayla

i feel that 5+ rating at the end. after watching Hamilton, it truly feels like you've just experienced a one of a kind masterpiece. Lin Manuel Miranda is a genius in every sense of the word and the whole cast and crew is phenomenal.

Omni

Oak is jammin! I'm loving it!. Thank you guys for watching this masterpiece. <3 <3 <3

Cats Chats

I feel like you guys would love Cats! If you watch the right version, please watch the 1998 stage movie production! The music is phenomenal! The 2019 movie kinda ruined the music for me.

J Knight

This is so good I had to come back and watch it twice

J Knight

The Reynolds Pamphlet was 95 pages long. That's so insane. He did NOT have to write all of that 😭

Aubrey Mayes

You should check out Sweeney Todd!!

Abby Layell Young

My absolute favorite! Once you start musicals, you will find some good and some you don’t jive with! Dear Evan Hansen is absolutely wonderful, but another one I never hear people talk about is Come From Away! Please please watch Come From Away it’s on Apple Tv and SO WORTH IT!

Susan B

Guys, thanks for doing this reaction. Saw the touring company last week in Atlanta and it’s so impressive, these actors are ATHLETES. It’s impossible to know when they take a breath. I’ve seen a few Broadway shows, and the only other that came close in what it required of the actors was Evita: constant movement while singing. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius, as I right? He doesn’t have the strongest singing voice in this cast but his emotions are so genuine.

Susan B

Can I suggest another Lin-Manuel Miranda musical on Disney? Encanto. (“We don’t talk about Bruno.” )

Susan B

Leslie Odom Jr (Burr) leaping off of that table while singing. Jesus. It’s like the musical Olympics.

Just Lily

You shoud watch Chicago!

precious926

I was delighted to see that you all reacted to Hamilton. I enjoyed it so much, you all barely missed any of the nuances and were so genuine in your amazement. I had the same absolutely flabbergasted & mind-blown feeling on my first watch. You can take in this musical (and cast albume) dozens of times and always catch something new. Thanks for sharing a great reaction! (I can't imagine how tough the YT edit must have been lol)

Anthony

I think Shrek should be the next musical. It's a really great adaptation of the movie

Anika

I'd love to see you all watch Sweeney Todd, Rent, Chicago, or maybe even the stage version of Into the Woods!

quinintheclouds

SUPER recommend you watch the professional stage performance of Into The Woods. Truly iconic musical genius

quinintheclouds

Company also has a professional recording, with a very small stage --- just a square -- and they use it brilliantly. Plus, it's Sondheim, so you know it's good

Tj Hammerlund

You have got to watch come from away!!! It’s sooooo good. It sucks you in like this one does

PaytLeighGrimmlin#1

You guys need to watch Shrek The Musical! It is so funny and is very true to the OG Dreamworks movie.

J Knight

It's official. I'm in my Hamilton phase again. I'm back for the fourth time 🤣

slavicandsapphic

Dunno if this has been recommended, but another musical like Hamilton is Hadestown! Not written by the same guy, but easily equal vibes and their songs are wonderful! There isnt an actual film production of it(yet) but the album is fully out on a lot of music platforms! And its like how Hamilton is full of songs and no acting so you wont miss anything :] Plus if you ever get the chance, I’m pretty sure Hadestown is on tour! Totally get being spoiled by Hamilton for being such an amazing masterpiece, so I figured to recommend something I felt was on par with this musical!! Loved this reaction so much, was so funny seeing yall become musical nerds 🫶

Trinity Bernhardt

I saw this on YouTube and started to click just to kill some time, but then I stopped and was like "I haven't watched it for a while. I will do full reaction." So glad I did. I forgot how good it is. Gonna be stuffy all night from sobbing, but still worth it. I am not a big musical person, but I have really loved what I have seen. Hairspray is my other favorite. I grew up loving Grease. They are just so much fun. I should watch more.

Cube Pylum

I would definitely recommend tick tick boom on netflix, it's more like a movie instead of a live production, it may also give you more insight on how musicals are made
