Excuse my small essay down below. To give some context what midsummer (or midsommar) actually is and whats real vs what this movie added. Midsummer is celebrated in late june and is probably bigger than Christmas here. You often celebrate it whith friends or family, often in the countryside or the forest. Some poeple have traditianol clothes kinda like the white one in the movie but much more colorful. But most poeple just have regular clothes. The wreathes made of birch leaves seen in the movie is actually pretty common and is made with the flowers found along the road and in the woods. The flowers show in the movie seem to me not like swedish flowers but more exotic ones. Another thing that is said about midsummer is that girls should pick seven different kinds of flowers during silence and walk over seven hills then put them under their pillow. Then when they sleep the man the will marry will be shown in a dream. Another thing that was kinda accurate was the dancining around the may pole. The Maypole symbolises prosperity adn good harvest. On midsummer eve before the big lunch/dinner around 2 o clock all the people in the area gathers around the maypole that was dressed earlier that day in flowers and birch branches. Often there is a band or some local people with instruments and a singer that leads the dance. He sings the traditinaol midsummer songs. Some of the more common ones( with direct translation) is: The small frogs, the fox sprinting over the ice, seven beutiful girls in a ring, the priests little crow, we are muscians and we walk around a juniper bush. Most of the dances are similar that they spin aroudn the Maypole before doing different things specific to the song. For example seven beutiful girls makes two rings, one with boys and one with girls. They spin in different diretions durign the verse and then the bridge is "The girls turn around, seeking after her friend in the crowd of boys" During the bridge you take the hands of the girl across you and the when the chorus starts you spin around with her. All the songs have different dances but like in the movie tyou mostly spin around in different ways. The fun part about it is that most of the people that are there( in my place i can be up to 300 people) dance. It varies in age between 3 to 80 so it is a big variety of who you get to dance with. The dance last around 1 hour and then yuo go back to your house and eat a traditional meal. Different poeple have diferent things but soem thigns need to bere there: severeal differenrts kinds of preserved herring, potato and butter, eggs, chives and cassler and sour cream. You also allways drink snaps which is kind of a strong spirit( like 40%) an when you drink you alwyas have to sing differents songs called snapsvisor. After the meal you often hang out until very late. One of the big reasosn for this is because midsummer in in the middle of june the sun dont set in most of sweden until like 4 am then rises agian at 3 am. This makes you lively all night and peoplo often drink alot all night. Midsummer also is kind of a fertility thing becasue alot of children is made during midsummer, so much that it is aterm called midsummer child. Around a third of all newborn children in sweden are born around nine months after midsummer(mars, april, may). This was my short explantion of swedish midsummer and how its different from th movie.

Loved your reaction to Midsommar. To be honest, I wouldn't have watched it again on my own, but to see your reaction and listen to you talking about it afterwards was great as always! Thanks a lot for your thoughts and it was kind of calming to see that you were as confused and irritated as I felt when watching it! 🙈 Greetings from Germany. 😊
