When Roku talked about how he had to learn earth bending, he described it as "bitter work" which is a small pun because it's the name of the episode where Aang was going through his struggles in learning earth bending with Toph

I think the idea behind them going back to trash the party is that despite them having their therapy session on the beach and everything, they still don't know how to cope with those new feelings. I think the outlet they get from destroying things and "conquering" weaker people is what really helped seal all that progress in. That's how they've been taught to deal with things in the fire nation.
