What an episode this one was!!! I mean the intensity just does not stop. We even get to see..... well some of you may know :) "Creature/Host" and it did not disappoint. That end was wild. But some of the details they revealed regarding the Fungus was great and that cold open was perfect!

Ok, I feel like I have to say this actually being in medicine- don't take this as a knock on the show or game, but this is in no way science. It's VERY loosely inspired by the real fungus but has less in common with the science than the more common zombie cause trope- something like rabies. It's a great story/setting/game and interesting unusual cause but there is no connection to reality or plausibility for an infection like this from fungus cordyceps or otherwise. Unlike they said in Ep1 there are already fungal infections (including what they named like aspergillosis) and there are drugs to treat them (so the "no treatment could even be made" again makes more sense for rabies virus than fungus). And the biology of influencing ants vs complex higher life is not at all comparable. Nothing wrong with using it for inspiration like this but it isn't science at all. Also very weird to have a fungal research scientist take tissue samples or give suggestions of how to address the spread instead of epidemiologists. I like the scene overall and including a mycologist, it would work for her to be advising, but doesn't make sense to act like a research biologist would have any idea what the implications are in humans.

y'all are quick! so glad you enjoyed it. re-playing the game 10 years later (I was 13 now I am 23!) and it's insane to see how so much is shot by shot or the exact same scene/dialogue. can't wait for next week!

Awesome reactions! You guys are so quick with the uploads. Keep it up! This episode was really good and it follows the game scenes so perfectly at times. HBO really committed to this adaptation and it shows. Can't wait for more!

the way y'all hold my sanity down everyday when you drop reactions. bless!

I did find it a little odd - as great as the opening was - that they went to a university professor instead of, like you said, an epidemiologist for advice on how to deal with the spread. Still a great scene, though.

🤜🤛 we record them Diamond Dave immediately goes to editing. So he is able to get this up. So far any way. 😁😂🤙

Very interesting indeed... and i tend to agree for the scene with the mycologist, although i don't think real fungal infection treatments would apply in this case. I'm no way an expert, far from it and i could be wrong, but from what i gathered that was a mutated strain of cordyceps, which attacks the brain. If such a strain would somehow manage to get inside and live, there wouldn't be a specific cure to counter it, at least that they know of. I think the whole purpouse of the opening scene of the first episode was something of this sort. Like covid, people are still getting it even with the vaccines, and that is becuase the are several mutated strains of it. The only tangible stretch here maybe... there is a difference between not having an actual cure at the ready and immediatly giving up because they already declared it wouldn't be possible.

The end with Tess I interpreted as her infection, which would manifest quickly given it's near her neck and head, was holding her in place to receive more fungus directly implanted, but maybe it was to keep the attack from being aggressive so she could keep working on the lighter.

Oh sure I wouldn’t expect current treatments to work well for this specific thing, though actually there often is broad effect beyond the original target so I would guess you could get some effect. I just couldn’t agree with the idea that “a treatment wouldn’t even be possible”. If you assume somehow a fungal infection could do what they say it would be very hard to treat and take more time than they have. Granted I’m sure an epidemiologist would start with a very harsh quarantine before “bomb it all” given only 14ish known cases so far so maybe a panicked out of their depth research scientist being asked would be a reason but makes for great television!

Yes exactly, same thing. In my mind i associated broad effects to something to start with, maybe. That is why i said that it was a bit of a stretch to immediatly call it impossible not matter what.

Well the entire series requires a heavy suspension of disbelief in most aspects. The fact that all other diseases have pretty much gone out the window is another thing. In real life, a bite from a perfectly healthy human has a high risk of resulting in an infection. Ellie’s been bitten twice now by basically decaying corpses and even though she’s immune to cordyceps, it’s kinda crazy she doesn’t even have so much as a rash lol.

Oh yeah for sure, the game also had a ton of those. The big thing about the last of us it's not how close it is to actual science, but the "science" of character development and interaction. Characters become real people and basically write themselves. I just thought that they handled the whole desperation of not having a cure overall pretty well. They didn't lie tecnically, they just didn't tell the whole truth.

Ashley Elliott

Great episode! I really wasn't expecting to lose Tess so quickly. From the way they introduced her character in the first episode I thought she'd be with us for the long haul. But it was very effective to show us the vast difference between how quickly the infection spread in her vs how Ellie was just totally fine. I think Joel needed to see something so clear cut like that to start believing that Ellie is actually immune. The world building that the writters are including around them is super interesting too. I genuinely have no idea where they're taking the story next but I'm excited for the next episode. (HBO knows what they're doing, dragging out the anticipation releasing episodes weekly, cause I'd have happily binged the whole first season by now).

Cherrie

Having played the game about 20 times, over and over again, it's so hard for me to watch this series. It's like I hear the names but I don't recognize the characters or the storylines. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not as good as the game so far. So if any of you have a chance to actually play the game, please do so. It's absolutely amazing!

Badd Medicine

Same... binge city. But glad they are doing this. All the talk and excitement would be over in 2 days it they released them all at once.

Justin Robertson

Don't worry about folks complaining it's not as good as the game. The game has a good story and pretty boring gameplay. Show so far is keeping me engaged better than the game did. The characters are pretty damn similar too.

Marco Gutierrez

I mean you not liking stealth is one thing, but you can't definitively say it has boring gameplay. It's such a tense game and you have viable options for stealth and for open combat, even if stealth is the optimal route. I found the gameplay to be fantastic.

Jeremy Champlin

Think back to the first episode. What foods did Joel and Sarah not eat? What ingredient do they all have in common? The answer is in the opening to this episode.
