To me, this movie, which I've loved and cherished since I first saw it, is about being unhappy and bored. Jack is the King of Halloween, that's all he's ever done, and he's perfect at it! But that's all there is in his life, and he's run out of enthusiasm, joy, and inspiration. As a result he doesn't see what's happening around him, i.e. Sally being badly treated, or her being in love with him. As with many of us, his sadness and anguish make him rather self focused. Then he finds Christmas, the most colorful, bright, glitter, and warm holiday there is. It's new, it's different! It's like nothing he's ever seen before, and his first thought is to share it, then to take it for himself as he's not been this inspired and joyful in a very long time. He never stops to realize that he can't be Santa because he's JACK SKELLINGTON! In the end, you can't be someone you're not, no matter how much you want to be, and the happiness you gain is worthless if it hurts others. Being shot down is literal here, he tried and failed. But he learned! He knows now that he's the Pumpkin King, and that trying to be someone else won't solve his problems or fix them. But his exposure to something new, and even failing to steal it, has broadened his mind, given him new vision and inspiration, and forced him to look outside himself, where he finally sees his value to others, and sees who cares for him most. Overall, to me, it's about Jack getting to grow, expand his mind and vision, and see inspiration in everything around him. And maybe also to sneak off to other holidays to enjoy them, lol!! Ouch, this was long winded! Hope it makes sense!

There was actually an extended intro where it explained more about the different holiday worlds, as well as an epilogue voiceover about what happened to Jack and Sally. Both were cut completely, or in the case of the intro were significantly reduced before "This is Halloween" begins. They were both also supposed to be voiced by Patrick Stewart - but you can still hear the full extended intro and the cut epilogue on the official soundtrack.
