2022-08-14 11:12:58 Yes, Hobbit was first and then Lord of the Rings was written. Also, LotR was written as a single book but its like the size of a Bible and the publishers wouldn't publish it except as a three volume series.

The Hobbit is actually written as a childrens book. This is why this seems easier in its contents. For these movies, Peter J never thought he would direct these movies. When LOTR was released, it was a issue with the rights to the Hobbits book and making a movie of it. The LOTR was exhausting to make, so Peter did not want to direct The hobbits. It was supposed to be Guillermo del Toro who directed it. .But it was so much delaying with all the deals, so he had to leave for another movie. Then Peter said he would do it. But again they got delayd because Peter had to go under surgery for ulcer. Jed Brophy who played Nori in the Hobbit, also played Sharku (the one whu "killed" Aragorn in the Two towers) and Snaga (the one who followed Pippin and Merry into the wood) in the LOTR. He impressed everybody so much that they wanted to cast him for an actual role in the Hobbit. The woman who called him to offer him the role, were actually so happy for him, I think she shed a tear :-)

The Hobbit was written as a single book and was quite short compared to the LOTR. It was only 310 pages long. Truthfully I enjoyed the first movie but didn't really care for how they messed with the book and added to it just to lengthen out the movies in the second movie. Due to that warping of the book, I never bothered to watch the third movie.

Okay! Finally got to watch this now. I guess I'll tackle the issue of these adaptations not being liked much. I personally have no major problems with them. I've read the entire Tolkien Legendarium. And I mean the ENTIRE Legendarium (Hobbit, LOTR, Appendices, Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, etc). The most common criticism of the Hobbit movies is the expansion of a relatively short book into 3 films by adding in stuff that didn't strictly happen on the pages of the Hobbit but DID happen during the time of the events of the Hobbit, you'll see more about those things in the next 2 films. I don't mind those at all, because the LOTR trilogy cut a lot of content from the books, and it was fun for me to see the little nods to other events. LOTR also added a bunch of shit that never happened in the books as well, but very few people complain about that. (Arwen was basically a non-entity until she married Aragorn. And characters like Tom Bombadil and Fatty Bolger and Glorfindel and Gildor Inglorion and Erkenbrand and Beregond and Prince Imrahil were all unceremoniously cut out entirely.) One valid criticism I think is they straight up made up a few characters and/or brought in "real" characters who were never part of this particular tale, and it was purely for the purpose of having a love story added. That's a completely valid complaint. Radagast for example only plays a VERY small role in the Fellowship of the Ring and is pretty much never mentioned again in the books. He was always someone I wanted to see more of and know about though, so I enjoyed his inclusion in this adaptation. Then there's also the stylistic issues. All the orcs in this are clearly CGI, versus in the LOTR it costumes and make-up. I prefer the old way of doing it, but I understand that Hollywood changed the way they do things, and I can't do anything about character design. That accounts for a lot of dislike as well. Finally I think some people don't enjoy these as much simply because the Hobbit was written for a much younger reader than the LOTR was. Some people just don't enjoy the more simplistic and childish adventure and prefer the epic, desperate struggle of good versus evil. That one is perfectly valid. I just have absolutely zero sympathy for the people who act personally insulted over a movie though. Fans can get pretty toxic about damn near anything. Ignore them and enjoy the films for what they are. God knows everyone else will.

When you guys get to the battle of the five armies please watch the extended edition because I know y'all enjoyed the battle sequences in LOTR. A lot of stuff was cut that really adds to the structure of the battle that I personally love due to time constraints. It is nowhere near as epic in the theatrical release so it's worth the longer watch time. Overall, all of the movies are best as the extended editions since they include everything and I find that they flow a lot smoother. I really enjoy an unexpected journey but only as the extended edition since a lot of comedy and character growth, which is not fully from the book but is still enjoyable to watch, was cut. I hope you guys enjoy the next two though and thanks for another great reaction :)

personally i think the end of the third is true enough to the end of the book to have made it worth it for me

I am rewatching this while I awaits number 2 :-) I am a Tolkien fan. I love Harry Potter and that world. But I REALLY love Tolkiens world. He actually created the languages first, I believe. He loved languages, and especially constructed lanuages. Then he had to create different "species" to the different languages he made up. In the appendices, it is a large part where you can read about the different languages and how to pronunciate it. Also you can learn how the languages evolve. I believe that Tolkien really wanted to write The Silmarillion. But he understood that it would be impossible to do without him finance it himself. The book eplains EVERYTHING. How the worl started, why things happen, why different "species" are still in Midgard. You can also read about all the kings (and queens), for the dwarves, Hobbits and so on. If you read everything, you get the answer to almost evertyhing. But Silmarillion is hard to read.

Chapter Eight

I am very behind in watching this, but just to address the eagles question (from both this movie and LOTR): What you have to understand is that Tolkien has an entire theology for this world that begins with a creation story and has its own rules and history and so forth. The eagles are direct creations of the lead god, and they have their job given to them by him. They are willing to help, but they don't just solve peoples' problems for them by taking them wherever they need to go/letting them skip their journeys for kind of the same reason that in Christian theology god tends to let people go through trials instead of just solving all their problems for them. (Not that it's a direct allegory with Christianity--actually Tolkien despised allegories and heavily criticized his friend C.S. Lewis for the allegorical aspects of the Narnia series.)

I have seen this before, but this time when I was watching the thought did come to my mind - why don’t the eagles fly them much closer to the Lonely Mountain? 😝 However, I would say the only reason Gandalf felt led to lead this mission by whatever forces motivate him, was for Bilbo to find the ring.
