This episode specifically is reliant on previous MCU knowledge because there's another what if storyline that's answered here. At the cemetery Hank states that Hope dies in Odessa working for SHIELD. The details of her death are told to us in a previous movie, but the outcome is different because in the main timeline it's not Hope who goes on the mission, it's Natasha. Five years before Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Natasha is sent on a mission to escort an engineer out of Iran. While they were driving through Odessa the car was hit and Natasha was shot through the abdomen in order for the bullet to kill the intended target. In this universe, the bullet probably hit a more fatal place in order to kill the intended target.

There's a series of DC Animated movies based on the New 52 series. It's a lot darker compared to other DC and Marvel content and the storylines in it are pretty wild. I highly recommend checking it out!

I'd love for them to watch them but I'm not sure how willing they are on watching a whole franchise worth of cartoon movies, yeah they've reacted to animations before and they're watching attack on titan but they seem more like live action people. I will say the dcamu is some of the best comic book content out there though.

This episode was based on the MCU prequel comic "Fury's Big Week" that was released before the Avengers movie. It created a connection between the Phase 1 movies. Answer, if you don't already have it, I recommend adding the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE HC MARVEL COMICS OMNIBUS to your collection. Contains every prelude comic published from Phases 1-3.
