I apologize in advance for my long post 😉 I think it was intentional how little we knew about the characters. My interpretation is that the story wasn't so much about the characters, but the nature of war, or more specifically civil war, secession, insurrection. There was no glory or triumph in the film, just punctuations of photos that looks eerily similar to those from coups , civil wars, and revolutions around the world now and in history. On another note, Texas and California are the top two states in GDP, so economically it would be feasible for them to ally and rival a US government they both considered illegitimate, provided other states allied with them or became neutral. All we know is that the president is at least in their third term, meaning the 22nd amendment was violated or removed. There was a mention of the dissolution of the FBI, which I don't see sparking war. I think it's a bad idea, but I don't think less government oversight in law enforcement would spark rebellion. Then the big one, authorizing air strikes on US citizens. They don't clarify if citizens in the states in rebellion are US citizens or not, just that they will be welcomed back upon surrender. It could be a case of air striking, domestically, a target of secessionist militias, with civilian casualties, hence air striking US citizens. Or of course it could just refer to air strikes in states in rebellion. They don't explain much, just that war is not to be desired. PS. My biggest issue with the film is the helicopter scene in the street. Nobody would ever do that, and I think the effect could've been done much better by seeing one position get obliterated by Gatling fire, and have it pan up to show the hovering harbinger of death as it fires again, and the camera moves from the helicopter above to the impact. I think that's a better illustration of the detachment of modern military machines from the devastation they cause. Okay, sorry for the long post.

Best part of this movie was the last fight sequence. They did their research on realistic infantry tactics. However, some things overlooked like the AH-64's chaingun firing like a minigun. But I'm just nitpicking.

I totally disagree about the lack of character development. This wasn't a 7 episode Netflix show. This wasn't about the characters. Not everything has to be about the characters we follow but more about what we see through their lens no pun intended. I didn't need their back stories at all.
