Matt Reeves' takes a gritty deconstructionist swing at the BATMAN mythos with a plus-size, wildly uneven but undoubtedly enthusiastic detective thriller. Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz deliver substantive turns and there's atmosphere to burn, but a semi-novel spin on the done-to-death Dark Knight routine ("What if Bruce Wayne was kind of BAD at being Batman at first?") and some welcome attempts to address the innately uglier aspects of the vigilante fantasy get ultimately overwhelmed by an overplotted script and stymied by franchise demands.
