Hello Patrons!

This is my last video of 2021 - a deep dive breakdown into the design of The Forgotten City - an excellent time-travelling, day-looping, crime-solving, remake of a Skyrim mod.

Hope you dig it.

I've got three Patreon posts scheduled for the rest of December - a reading list, playlist, and year-in-review stats update. Which means I can go off and rest for a while. Play some of that Halo Infinite, that's pretty fun. If you upgrade the hookshot all the way it becomes an absurdly overpowered superweapon and I love it.

How The Forgotten City Works

Great video ! The Forgotten City was almost my favorite game of the year, but this is also the year when I finaly clicked with Outer Wilds, and I have to admit : its DLC Echoes of The Wild is the best adventure game I ever played. Like Forgotten City, once inside the storyline, the exploration is a little more guided than in the base game, with multiple leads, and there is a lot of discovery and revelation along the way. The narration of what the player is doing is really well done in parallel of the story the player is trying to unravel. And I just love the "you could have done this since the begining, you just had to have the knowledge" kind of design. Fortunatly for Forgotten City, it has a Ancien Rome atmosphere, witch is so rare in videogames, so it's directly a top 10 games.

I had my money on Before Your Eyes. Guess I’ll have to save this one until after I play it.

Interestingly enough, Elsinore is also a time looping indie game in which you have to prevent a crime and find out who's responsible. But it didn't get that much attention, probably because of the setting. This immersive experience can actually be traced back to The Colonel's Bequest, a 1989 Sierra adventure game in which you have to find who the murderer is - back in the 80s, adventure games had subtle conditions, consequences, dangers, and "virtual theatre" that governed NPC behaviour. The Forgotten City, however, manages to solve a lot of the onboarding problems that these games had.
