So, I like to stream games every now and again. I get to show off something new, or something I love, or just joke around and show a different side to my personality than the usual stuffy academic Mark you get in the videos.

But one thing that annoys me about streaming is that I can't capture the footage. You can't really stream and record at the same time (Elgato does have a card that can do this but it's hella expensive and only works on PC), and I can't use the livestream recording from YouTube because it's so low quality and has my voice and face cam on it.

But I figured out a solution! Today, I streamed the first two hours of Days Gone to YouTube... and also recorded the first two hours in 1080p, 60fps, amazing quality.

It works like this: the PS4 plugs into an HDMI splitter. This can then duplicate the signal into two outputs.

One goes into an old Elgato HD. This only does 30 frames per second, but that's fine for streaming. So that outputs to my PC - and streams to YouTube. I hook my mic up to my PC for commentary.

The other HDMI output goes to my Elgato HD60. This then hooks up to my Mac and records the footage. No commentary, and full quality - in 1080p and 60 frames per second. Perfect for Game Maker's Toolkit.

There are two problems. One is: I don't have a camera for my PC. I usually use the FaceTime camera in the Mac for streaming. So might need to get a little USB cam. The other is, I can't use this for PC games. So I'd either need another device (my laptop), or find some other solution...

Anyway. I like solving problems like this and wanted to show you what I cooked up!

Also, GMTK just hit 600,000 subscribers! Thank you so much!
