Hello!

So, for your final reading list of 2018 I decided to do something a tad different. I wanted to gather together the best writing and videos on the game’s stand out releases. I’ve got pieces about the music of Celeste, the last hit animation of Smash Bros Ultimate and the depiction of slavery in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

Some of these pieces were on previous reading lists this year so apologies if you’ve already seen them. I just wanted to make this as complete as possible.

If you’ve got more pieces that you think I’ve missed, please do chuck them in the comments below!

Damn. You did NOT like Red Dead Redemption 2 huh? Hope to see more content from you in 2019. Happy Holidays!

Man, I really didn’t like that The Medium article on Spider-Man. It disregards the hard work that Insomniac put on that game and overly generalized why people enjoyed it. It’s cool that this person doesn’t like the game, but to be this arrogant with his opinion and ending the article with “no one is going to talk about this game” felt pretty shitty of that person :/

Yeah... I've very often felt burnt out on games with similar game play mechanics since reaching adulthood over 15 years ago and this article still didn't resonate with me at all.

Love your content and shared content as usual Mark! The reading lists are something I enjoy a lot since there's a lot that one can miss every month. But the RDR2 article "Red Dead Redemption 2's Redface Proves How Far Games Haven't Come" is one of the worst articles I've read in some time in my opinion. There are many, many things I think are ignorant and/or plain wrong in that piece but the core argument is incredibly flawed. Like the name suggests, voice actors are hired for their voice acting. Not their skin color, not their ethnicity but only their voice. Hiring a white man for a black role in voice acting is not black-facing, since there is no face involved. There is nothing "racist", "violent" or "aggressive" about that :D If Rockstar would've gone through the auditions and told black and native american voice actors to go away because they only want a white voice actor, then that would be racist. But when the argument revolves around a japanese-parsi voice actor in a black-native-american role and calling that racist, then it just becomes absurd. The idea of excluding anyone from a voice acting role based on their exact skin color or where they are from is pretty racist in my book. If there's one good thing about that article in this list, then it's because it's great food for thought and another piece that sparks discussion. Shame that I can't agree with the article itself though.

This came in at the perfect time. Needed to brush up on 2018 game design. :D

I think it is really funny how Marks own videos are better than nearly every video he recommends. And I don‘t even think the videos he recommends are bad his own videos are just really good.
