Hello! Welcome back to GameClub.

Here’s how GameClub works: we pick a game, and then go play it. We discuss the game on Discord as we play, but avoid chatting about spoilers until a specific date. When that date hits, all bets are off and the game can be discussed in full.

As promised, I’ve got fewer choices this time and I think they’re all roughly on the same level in terms of popularity. I’ve got a new game, a must-play indie, and a 90s classic.

Use the poll below to pick your poison and I’ll be back soon with the results!

Pyre

The brand-spanking new game from Supergiant (Bastion, Transistor) is a mix between interaction fiction, JRPG, and basketball. Flashy, stylish, unique.

Available on PC, Mac, and Linux, as well as PlayStation 4.

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons

A unique and memorable adventure game about two brothers, where you control the siblings simultaneously with both analogue sticks. Every design nerd should play it for its ludonarrative pleasures.

Available on PC, PS3 and PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and even iOS and Android.

System Shock 2

A true classic, a titan of the immersive sim philosophy, and a very influential game (see: Bioshock, Prey, Dead Space, etc). Get it played before the sequel comes out!

Available on PC, Mac, and Linux

If you’re not sure how to get onto the Discord, make an account over at Discord and then link it to your Patreon account here. You will then be automatically invited to the channel. Any issues, message me!

Never had the chance to play Brothers and I heard lots of positive things about this game. This month gameclub would be perfect to make me discover it!

Been missing these but reckon I'll get back on the horse if Brothers gets through :)

Regardless of whether System Shock 2 wins or not (and I hope it will), I want to play it. Should I play the first game before that, though? Thanks to the Enhanced Edition, it seems like it's a lot more palpable and playable for contemporary tastes compared to the untouched original.

If System Shock wins I will have to finally play it. One game off the list of shame :D

Why, Mark? Why must you present options that are all good? I do have to say though it is nice to see the votes split down all three selections.

James Sweeting

Don't mind if Brothers or System Shock 2 wins. I've played Brothers a couple of times. But if System Shock 2 wins might finally prompt me to play it. Got it in a sale a couple of years ago.

I tried the original because I like to play series from the start, but I just couldn't. There are too many functions right off the bat. The tutorial throws everything at you before you start doing anything. Also the text was super tiny on my screen and there doesn't seem to be any way to improve it. Didn't like it at all.

Oh jeez, this ones tough. I voted for Brothers, I'm a sucker for weird control schemes, but I'd be cool with any of them.

Ben Visness

Great mix of games. The only reason I didn’t choose Brothers is because I’ve already played it. That said, Brothers was such a powerful emotional experience that it left me sobbing, so more people need to play it for sure...

Darri Skúlason

Man..really want to see videos about all 3 games, hard to vote for just one..but if I imagine that the vote is "only one of these 3 will EVER get a video made about them, and not the others" (which I really hope it isn't!) ..then I would have to go for Brothers, one of the most original and affecting games I've played, wether indie or otherwise.

GameMakersToolkit

This isn't for videos (though, sometimes a video will come out of it, like for Psychonauts and Ori). It's for our community GameClub, which is like a book club :)

I picked Brothers as I have played it and reeeeeally want to wait for iPad for Pyre (Fingers all crossed they actually port it)

Anonymous

Hhhhhhh dang, this is a tough choice. I'm obviously dying to play Pyre(gotta actually finish Transistor first, tho :P), but I'm going for System Shock as what I think is the one with the most interesting topics to be discussed.

Anonymous

I voted for Pyre because I want some motivation to power through it. I would love SS2 though because it's something I wouldn't normally play. While Brothers is a great game, I feel like it's been overshadowed by other games in the same genre over the couple of years since its release

Anonymous

So I already own all of these which is nice. Voted for Pyre since I'm already well into the game and it's certainly interesting. Brothers I've already finished and recently watched the SGDQ speedrun so I'm unlikely to replay it, but it certainly has a few things worth discussing. System Shock 2 sits unplayed in my library. I know almost nothing about it besides it being regarded as a classic.

I played pyre, and oh man theres a lot to talk about, and its hard to do it without spoiling everyone

SpeckObst

All good choices, but I'm choosing Pyre to justify setting aside some time for it this month

So happy the Brothers won the vote. Big fan of the game and how it combines the controls with the story telling at the end of the game. Thats a masterpiece of a design!
