[FULL REACTION] The Martian (2015)

Great reaction to a fantastic movie! So- about the head of NASA you (and alot of watchers) hate. This is coming from someone who grew up with NASA models over his bed and is very pro space- as portrayed The Director is mostly either right or at least making reasonable decisions pretty much throughout the movie. It's easy to think he doesn't care/is being false etc without context of the world he's unfortunately operating in- the US space program's support and funding is always very tenuous. He's in a very difficult position managing the public and government reaction to what happens. He's trying to manage expectations like not making promises to bring him home when that is a HUGE longshot the Watney could survive long enough no matter what NASA does. He can definitely seem to not care, but letting the public decide space exploration is too dangerous after 1 incident, or if the public or Congress decides that NASA can't accomplish what it claims it can, they lose funding and NASA is already terribly poorly funded. And even ignoring the potential to damage decades worth of future funding if the wrong impression is given, focusing on rescuing Mark would require a LOT of public and government willingness to spend a LOT of money very quickly on a very low chance of saving him. Going to get him is (to me at least) the right thing to do but would take very careful management and some difficult decisions.

Well said. And I will reiterate about government-funded programs - it is taxpayer dollars that pay for space exploration. There are always those who will argue that the billions spent on NASA and unrelated military programs could be better spent on other things at home. The quest for knowledge is what *should* drive the space program but it is subject to political and public opinion.

Is this the theatrical release or the extended edition?
