Watchcast Schedule for September 2023: A Little Ghibli and Hong Kong Action (Patreon)
Content
Hey everyone! Alex here to give you the full rundown on what we're gonna be checking out for the Watchcast this month. As we've said in our last few streams and podcasts, we're going to be taking the second week of the month off entirely, so there won't be a Watchcast that week. But we still have three movies that we're sure you're gonna love spread throughout the month. Here's what we've got cooking.
Monday, September 4th: Porco Rosso (1992)
We had our Mission Control and Mysterious Benefactor patrons vote on an anime film they'd like us to see, and they chose Studio Ghibli's delightful adventure Porco Rosso. Brad and Vinny had never seen it, and despite it being one of my favorite Miyazaki movies, I hadn't seen it in ages. What did the other boys think of it? Tune in on Monday to find out!
Monday, September 18th: Righting Wrongs (1986)
For our two Hong Kong action flicks, I decided to pick a couple of films starring Michelle Yeoh's co-stars from some of the films we watched back in March. First up is the other movie from Cynthia Rothrock's Hong Kong era I'd call a full-on banger. Also directed by Yes, Madam's Corey Yuen, this is another one chock full of killer fight scenes (including one of my personal favorites from this era with Rothrock squaring off against B-movie action legend Karen Sheperd), and a bunch of familiar faces from some of the films we watched earlier this year.
(There is also a Vinegar Syndrome US Blu-ray release of this that is excellent, if you want to go that route.)
Monday, September 25th: Hard Boiled (1992)
Hoooooo baby. John Woo's final film before heading off to Hollywood has an outsized reputation as one of the all-time greats of the action genre, and it's a rare case where that reputation is 100% deserved. Chow Yun-Fat has arguably never been cooler than he is here (and he's cool in a LOT of movies), and just about every action sequence in this has one or two shots that I would describe as one of the wildest things I've ever seen. The final 25-ish minutes is borderline orgiastic in its over-the-top craziness. Seriously, it's a wild ride from start to finish. And once again, somehow I am the only one among our trio who has previously seen it, so you get to hear what Vinny and Brad think of seeing it for the first time. Would that I could go back and see it for the first time myself!

And that's the schedule! As always, thanks to everyone watching and listening along with us. We'll see you at the movies!
