Canute is a very complex character. He doesn’t like the Viking way of thinking. In episode 18 he said “i will give meaning to your lives and deaths”. He is trying to change the way of the Vikings as you could see with him avoiding war and punishing them for pillaging. Thorkell (the most Viking dude in the anime) sees through canutes plan. But Canute also has to be ruthless otherwise the Vikings won’t respect him.

Yes part of why Thorkell is displeased with Canute is because he won’t partake in a war, but also because as a Norse warrior the way Canute does things is looked down upon. Posoining your enemies won’t get you to Valhalla after all

Thorkell is not only upset there is no more war. From a Norse Warriors perspective in this story at least, killing an enemy in anything other than honorable combat is cowardly. In Thorkell’s eyes, Canute ended the war in a “cowardly” way. And he’s extra upset considering how much potential and high regard he held Canute in during S1. He even said himself that he saw Thors within his eyes. Look back to Thorfinn. There’s a million times he could’ve just killed Askeladd in his sleep. But Thorfinn considered himself a Norse warrior, and found that cowardly. NOW, look at Askeladd, who much like Canute, ALSO took underhanded approaches to get what he wanted. Killing his father in his sleep to acquire his estate.
