One of the reasons Thorfinn is so small is most likely because he lived his childhood with the Danes and Askelaad so he wasn't really eating and getting the right nutrients like a normal child should.

Thorfinn was reminiscing a village askeladds band first raided in episode 5. Einar and thorfinn are similar in age so the timeline doesn’t add up for it to be askeladds men.

When you said Thorfinn’s grown last episode it did make me laugh because our boy will always be a short king. His cannon height is 5ft 1. In the anime they go with 5ft 2. I guess so he’s not comically short in moments like he is in the manga. Where you have a manga panel with him beside a character and you only see his forehead. 😄 Coincidentally that makes him the same height as Levi in AOT. That’s how short he is. “Thorfinn is so tiny and pretty now” I FEEL YOU SOO HARD. The fandom calls this Thorfinn’s ‘Kurt Cobain’ era by the way. Also it’s never made clear in the anime sadly as it removes all the years and dates that they do in the manga, so Thorfinn is now 19 and it’s been just over a year since Askeladd died.

When Askeladd died, Thorfinn lost his reason to live, and has become an empty soul going through the motions of life.

another episode that leaves you wanting more

Thorfinn failed in his goal, and ultimately, wasted 11 years of his life for nothing. It’s so tragic to see him like this but such a logical step in his character. He was fighting entirely for Askeladd’s head. With that gone, he has no reason to be that hot headed and constantly fighting for that next duel individual we knew in the Prologue.

Seeing Thorfinn like this, completely detached from everything, really hurts your heart ToT When things are less dire, we get to appreciate how freaking funny Vinland Saga can be. Olmar is a riot, the parents trying to win their part in Ketil's family, it all makes me chuckle. I believe the ability to buy your freedom back is true in history of the region, though I imagine only those who could benefit from it, or were rich enough, did it. I've read some places that some believed that if you have become a slave, it was simply proof you were inferior and deserved to be one, and that you should stay one. Though that might be simply one interpretation.

you might mot realise it yet but you were introduced to one of the best characters in all of Vinland Saga story
