The nuance behind Askeladd is just so good. He’s a character you have to read through his actions. His life is a living contradiction. He hates Vikings, but considers himself one. His best friend was a Viking as well. Wales is his home, but he didn’t first step foot into it until he was 14. He puts on this facade of hating Thorfinn but even since as early as episode 8, he’s trying to mentor him. Which is clearly due to his respect of Thors. As shown in episode 12 with his flash of Thors, it’s clear that Thors WAS an Artorious like figure to him, just how post 1x19 Canute is. And he wasn’t “joking” when he asked him to lead his gang. Looking at his solemn expression looking down, he meant it. You can see his disappointment due to his frustration that Thorfinn ISNT like Thors. And I’m one of the belief the reason he let Thorfinn stay was because he had hope Thorfinn could become a man similar in caliber. All in all, Askeladd is a top 5 anime character for me.
