The manga artist of Vinland Saga, Makoto Yukimura, never really intended Askeladd to be a central figure in this story, but he is one of the most well written, and complex character in anime. He was written specifically for Thorfinn who Yukimura believed that Thorfinn should have somebody to accompany him in this story.

He did a great job. Askeladd is such a nuanced and realistic character. Instead of making everything black and white this author created a pretty diverse cast.
