Also, as a more insightful comment than above: In the shot you mentioned of Askeladd almost glowing, the ferryman was being attentive to Askeladd's armor. This is a seemingly unimportant detail, and is easy to miss, but is actually very interesting.

Alana. A little history hint. Watch closely Askeladd attire and how his armor is different of the rest of his men, who are "Danes". Also the Commander they meet, his name is Gratianus. What that name sounds like?. Not English, not Dane but reminicense of the Roman empire that conquerer England centuries ago. Also the boat they sail are named triremes, Roman boats. Askeladd use a Roman style armor like Gratianus. The author knows his stuff and research well the history for this.

You are gonna adore Thorfinn by the end. As for Askeladd's flashback to Thors, his dialogue at that scene referred directly to Thors. BUT Askeladd is purposefully changing his way of thinking and instead of putting his faith in a person he truly believes in like Thors (remember he asked Thors to lead his group way back?), he is now putting his faith in a person he does not currently believe in, but sees that he has potential to become great (Canute). Askeladd sees SOMETHING in Canute, but no one can tell what that is.
