Thorfinn trying to “prove himself” through battle not as a skill but more-so to return “honour” to his fathers name. Cause when Askalad fought Thors it was cowardly and disrespectful, which hurts Thorfinn more than the “loss” itself. Which is why he won’t kill Askalad in his sleep and keep “challenging” him in a “honourable” duel. But nonetheless there’s more to it as well. Also, in Viking mythology, fighting is seen as the ultimate form of honour and self respect a “man” can get, and to die in battle in a “honourable” way leads them to Valhalla (With Odin-God, and other warriors). Furthermore, the contrasting character we see is amazing, from True-valiant Thors, to Cowardly-sly Askalad, power(strength)-fight hungry Thorkill is so amazing. Each and every character has their own unique story which we explore and evolves as time goes by. Vikings and their amazing storytelling cannot go wrong.
