Norse Mythology: The Norse had multiple afterlives, and which one you got into often depended on how you died. Valhalla is the mead hall that houses the "Einherjar". If you made it to Valhalla you'd spend your days fighting and training with the Gods and the other Einherjar, then everyone's wounds would heal and the nights would be spent drinking and partying. At least until Ragnarok, then Odin would lead the Einherjar into one final battle against the Frost Giants. However, in order to make it to Valhalla you **had** to die in battle. So, to anyone who wanted to get into Valhalla, dying on the battlefield was a good thing.
