Peak. But fr this is one of the best directed episodes of anime I have ever seen

Tunnel Rat

I present to you peak. Now everybody pray to the Aniplex Gods that they grant us a season 2 🙏 If you’re curious as to why or how Lena is there, it’s because the squad has slowly been making their way back to the Republic where the Morpho has situated itself. You can see hints here and there from previous episodes like the ruined flag of San Magnolia, as well as the fallen statue and signs. And that field of Lycoris radiata? The same field Spearhead had previously passed by during episode 9. So in a way, everything has somewhat come full circle. 86 symbolism for you.

Erik

We have finally arrived at peak 👏👏👏

Alana Misako

i found out this didn't cover all of the LN after i finished s1 and i can't believe there is MORE? after the greatness of what i just witnessed, there's MORE??

Tunnel Rat

Yeah, this season only covered volumes 1-3😂 it’s got up to volume 12 (translated) which is apparently halfway finished according to Asato.

Ara Araragi

Thank you for the extended version!

WE'RE ALMOST THERE GUYS!!

Vol. 13 is scheduled to be released in January 2024 (in Japan). There is also one alt. volume that includes unpublished and limited circulation shorts.

Well. uufff....how I say this. Episode 22 of 86 is THE BEST episode of anime I've ever seen in my life. My opinion of course. This masterpiece is worth of being studied in cinema schools. Masterclass of visual composition and production. Shin descends in despair and beggin to the Legion to kill him completing the circle that he was talking to Frederica two episodes ago. He don't want nothing and he is already left alone again. His world closes and has nothing to live. And then enters Lena, like a reincarnation of San Magnolia, dispersing the "noise" and stepping out of Shin mental and emotional barriers, erasing them. Shin was ready to die and Lena prevent that. He's not alone. She's also carries the memory of the dead, not only Shin. The dialog and the tension is awesome and then Lena breaks it all with "Voices of the chord" exploding on the speakers. Orgasmic. No joke that Asato cries when watching this. I cried too of course.

Rodrigo Flamenco

If you noticed in the last episodes, they've been getting closer and closer to the republic. You could see statues of San Magnolia, you could see the tattered flags. If you remember when they said goodbye, they were looking at a field of red flowers (lycoris) right in the borders of the 86 sector. They are now standing on the same field of flowers as when they said goodbye. Also, the Federacy used the Para Raid they had as a base to build the new one. Howerver, they decided to leave an "easter egg" in it. They left the last syncronization configuration that the para raid had. As a way to honor the people who created that technology. Hence why when Lena used the amplification device to reach all of the pararaids she was able to connect with Shin. If you notice the light in Shin's pararaid, it's usually Yellow, but when Lena connected it turns green, showing the connection to the different configuration. However the syncronization wasn't perfect as the new pararaid was different, so that's why there was some static in there. Thanks to the amplification device, Lena's voice reached all the way to the battlefront Shin was fighting, and because it was distorted, that's why he believed that he heard Lena as one of the Legion's voices. Also remember that Lena and Shin never met face to Face. So she also isn't aware that the symbol of the headless skeleton was the personal mark of Shin. Cyclops saw that personal mark and that's why she was surprised, and also why she told Lena that she wouldn't recognize that. Shiden (Cyclops) is a troll, so she kept it secret to play a joke on both of them in the future knowing that they would probably meet each other soon. Also, Kiri used to lift Frederica, the same way he did as he saved her, he gave her one last lift as a good bye.

wow thank you for the extended version Alana, truly amazing how brilliant this show is 😃

AkdrzlLOL

One of my favourite episodes of all time, 86 was really something special.

Nicholas

the manga got cancelled/put on hiatus after a couple chapters of this current arc due to the health of the mangaka, but while we are covering like vol 2-3 of the light novel, there is like 11 volumes of 86 content out there, its a really special show and i hope they are able to keep making more in the future. also you can definitely see where the 3 months of anime hiatus went, the production quality on this is killer

Fars

Nice decision for extended version, this is peak after we wait for 86 days 😭

Kevin Nauta

Those of us reading the light novels are waiting for volume 12, which is out sometime this autumn. I’m so glad you took this journey along with us. I love this story so much.

jacksan1

I remember back when Alana was running the next anime poll and 86 was winning that there was this one character saying that 86 wasn't something that she would like so don't make her watch it and stuff. Men, that's why we said let Alana decide. The clown was hugely misled.

jacksan1

In Japan, Vol. 13 is coming out in January, so this saga is definitely going further.

Ara Araragi

Just a note on the confusion about the Undertaker symbol: When Cyclops mentioned the marking, Lena misunderstood and thought she was talking about the Giad Federacy insignia that she just saw on the helicopters. Cyclops didn't bother clarifying for the reasons Rodrigo already mentioned.

Calo Lee Candame

We had to wait 86 days for this episode but as you can see, it was totally worth it. It has to be one of my favourite anime episodes of any show, Lena's entrance is amazing. The song Voices of the Chord is wonderful, both Ikumi Hasegawa and Chiba Shouya gave their all with their voice acting and the director put together incredible shots, I still get emotional now, so good...

jacksan1

They, among others, will be performing live at the "Reading Stage 86" event on October 1.

Tinkerlin

Anyone else notice Shin compressed the entire operation and all that happened onto one side of an A4...

Charles Baldwin

To be fair to Cyclops, trolling Lena this way is basically the first allied operation between the Republic and the Federacy.

J H

When Frederica is recounting how she survived, what we are seeing is her "power" allowing her to see Kiri's final memory...that is, his POV of carrying her to safety. It's a memory she will always have for the rest of her life, proof that she saved her knight in the end.

Dennis

There we go, my favorite episode in 86. It's been a long time coming! I am so so glad you picked this up Alana! Thank you! Or maybe I should thank the patreon who voted for it (incl. me!), but still I am so grateful to watch this with you Alana! Now just the final and most wholesome episode left! Can't wait for Wednesday.

Voices of the chord's lyrics are shin's pov.. man what a great OST hiroyuki sawano back at it, what a genius.

Dennis

FYI the song played when Shin and Lena meets is Voices of the Chord and is an English version of Avid. It is so fricken good!

Jordan Landry

The 1-2 punch of episodes 22 and 23 is UNRIVALED

виина

noooo we need the last one right now

jacksan1

And it read, printed in the 48-size font, "Bad A** Eliminated. All members of the mission squadron still kickin' hard. So there."

this is one long ass username

Loved this episode. Btw Alana I saw what you did to those machine village kids in Nier after you built them that slide and I am still shocked 😂

Julian R

Ahhh, bless you for the extended reactions😭

Ki

love this episode, appreciate the full reaction

jacksan1

Still no sign of an "in English" ticket site for the October 1 live streaming of the "Reading Stage 86." On the Japanese site they are letting people buy streaming tickets that (for an extra dough) come with a special one-off 86 bandana.

Sam

The last 3 episodes are so freaking good. They are right up there with like AoT S3 E16-18 (and few other AoT) as the best 3 episode stretch in all of TV. Can't believe there are some that call this show mid, but I guess you find haters for everything. I'm glad you're bringing up the production, because this is Toshimasa Ishii's first time being a director and he absolutely kills it. Off-topic, but if you haven't decided on a next show yet and want to balance the slice of life rom com with some trauma anime, then I'd throw Hell's Paradise and Heavenly Delusion into the discussion. Both shows aired on the amazing spring 2023 lineup so those are only 1 cour shows so far.

Eric The Viewer

Alana: "How did they survive?" Answer: Plot armor. The most powerful item in sci-fi amd fantasy fiction.

Eric M

When cyclops mentioned the “sign” she didn’t mean the giad federacy symbol on the helicopter, she was talking about shins symbol on his juggernaut, his reaper emblem. Cyclops noticed it but Lena didn’t. Took me my second rewatch to notice that.

halfeldian

I remember when I watched this very episode last year I thought "Alana is really, really gonna love this type of show for reactions" then I went on to Discord and recommended it looool finally, we are here 🥳

halfeldian

Naurrr just how compelling the storyboarding and animation was of Shin being haunted of his survivor guilt and emotional turmoil from war! I was in awe as well on my first watch. Finally, an episode dedicated "Shin", a trifecta of purposes ... as Lena gives him reason to hold his chin higher, Raiden assuring "Nobody left you behind!" (cried here, bec Shin convoluted thinking as the Reaper always the last man standing depicts otherwise) and Fredericka talking sense and full-circling his purpose to move forward. You could say, keeping Rei's juggernaut piece as the reason for Shin to hold on and continue in life, is the same way how Lena held that letter tightly and she was holding specifically in the lower left (where Shin's handwriting was) is also the heart of the reason for her to keep moving forward. Sharing the ideals with him that initially inspired her to bring the dead comrades who fought alongside them, but, bringing them on the other side of the battlefield. Dynamic is insane ... The juggernaut piece dropped, the aspect ratio changes, and the border changes from dark to light depicting a change of heart/purpose, giving light and new meaning to someone. Et al A lot of masterpieces out there but this episode has special place in my rankings when it comes to sophistication of every meaning and symbolism, uniqueness and art placed in every scene. Animation, VAs never a doubt. Ah, did I mention Avid coming in clutch for the waterworks?

Antonius K

Man rewatching this with you has been such a treat, i kept it together on my first watch of it but now I’m as much of a mess as you are😅glad you’ve come to love this show as much as I have, and can’t wait to see how you react to the next episode😁

Hakim Yakob

Can't wait for the next ep, tissues on the ready with the plan to spam the play/pause button to replay a specific scene! 🥲
