Agreed this beginning is rough but please stick with it, it'll be worth it. My opinion is the beginning shows how much in his head he is but it makes his growth better by comparison.

Don't worry, trust the process and we will reach peak. As much as this show is romance, it is also a coming of age story and it is exceptional in both aspects. If you can pay attention to small details and like to think a bit deeper about some parts of a show, the viewing experience will be extremely rewarding.

Watch "My Happy Marriage". You won't regret it. Ichikawa is a chunibyo, an edgelord, so per se is cringy af, but is harmless. Yamada is weird, but is sweet. This is a "puppy love" story. It navigates between the cringe and the "too sweet" to handle.

Episode 1 is deceptively cringe, but in a bad way. As everyone has stated, the real show starts from episode 2 onwards. Prepare to inject a whole lot of sugar straight into your veins for this show.

As someone that highly Recommends this show. The 1st ep is definitely an outlier in terms of quality. But you definitely picked up on the fact that the cringe nature of these characters is because they are Middle schoolers. One thing that really stands out even from the First Ep and continues in quality throughout the series is the Music, composed by the same person that did Chainsaw Man and A Silent Voice.

I started watching this show yesterday after the it won the poll to see what the hype was about. Honestly the first 3 episodes were really cringe. However, it’s gets way better from episode 4. I finally started to see why people were calling it cute. I still think you would like my happy marriage better tho.

The middle school cringe never fully goes away, mostly because of the other boys, but it still works because: 1) the show makes it clear these boys suck in the way a lot of boys that age suck and 2) it's balanced by a lot of sweetness and growing up between both main characters

And not just edgy, but very socially awkward. As you get further into the show, it becomes clear that he's not really a creepy weirdo--that's just his defense mechanism. He plays the role of the creepy weirdo to get people at school to leave him alone. That's a minor spoiler, I guess, but I think it's one that's worth dropping because the first episode or two really hits you hard with the whole "protagonist is a creepy weirdo" thing, which can be very off-putting, and you don't get the additional context until later. I do think the show is worth sticking with; it gets a lot better.

"The typical tropes where the boy is super shy and everything, and then you have this girl who's 'dumb' or 'stupid,' and like brings him out of his shell." So it's My Dress-Up Darling, but the characters are younger, dumber, and the MC's weird passion/coping mechanism is true crime instead of hina dolls. Guess that means you'll end up loving this show!

Technically I would say what you said about Ichikawa is a spoiler but because people get incredibly weirded out by the first few episodes because they take it way too seriously instead of viewing it comedically like I think the show actually wants you to, I think it's fair to already mention it here. There's so much good stuff in the first episodes but people just will simply not pay attention to them in favour of being creeped out by an edgy 13 year old

The end of episode three is when it starts to find its stride and the whole rest of the show is something you can’t miss so I really hope you can get through till then cause it’s so worth!

This is in my top 3 romcoms of all time along with Kaguya-Sama and My Dress-Up Darling. I see that you're one of those people that get freaked out by the first episodes, but even those are very well made in my opinion. Saying these are super cringe or anything like that is discrediting the writing in my opinion, they genuinely have amazing moments and everything makes sense. The way these characters are written is incredibly realistic and I can relate to a lot of it from my own early teenage years. Just keep in mind that this is supposed to be a realistic portrayal of middle schoolers so that's what you're gonna get. One problem is also that a lot of the reasons this show is amazing are, for example, how subtly things progress and how smooth it all feels. There's a lot of little details that many people just simply seem to miss, and I don't want to gatekeep or anything if people still enjoy the show anyways, but it does make me sad to see sometimes when stuff gets overlooked.

Yeah it has some awkwardness in the beginning... Let's see how you like the development! If it is not your thing, then so be it. The show is a lot like dress up darling, a bit steep in the beginning, but gets really sweet and wholesome after that!

Shounen romance is just more popular. Hell just from Hidives limited selection and that season Insomniacs after School is much better, but doesn’t have all these shounen romance tropes. I’m really surprised she hasn’t gotten to watch Fruba yet. Absolute peak of the genre imo.

i don't think me saying the characters are cringe is discrediting the writing. they ARE cringe and that's okay! because that's how middle schoolers act! i even talked about how realistic the writing felt in my end comments. but just because it's realistic, doesn't mean it can't be hard to watch for some people. i'm a gal in my 20s who is way past her middle school years, so reliving these cringey moments is a bit much LOL

i dropped aot, fmab, death note, hxh, cowboy bebop, steins;gate, vinland, and one piece all before their first episodes finished too. too many other good shows to watch i know right! watching the first episode is too much commitment for me, let alone like the first 3 to let the story take off, who needs that.

Late comment. But it does get better. The cringe will still be there, but not so much. It’s just a really sweet story of two middle schoolers growing up and finding first love with each other. I’m reading the manga, and it keeps getting better and better

I’m a huge romance anime guy and this show is tied with Horimiya as my favorite romance stories of all time. It’s incredible and season 2 is even better
