I like what they did with Eugene’s death in the anime. The transition from him smiling and holding the locket to just a bloody hand on the ground, before the voice actor even finish saying his line. No character flashback, no “going out with a bang”, just quick and brutal. A small detail that’s easy to miss is that you can see Shin’s hand before picking up the locket was full of blood, then he hesitated a bit when he was about to touch the locket, then when he showed the locket to Eugene, you can see his finger is a bit cleaner, he wiped them before touching someone’s precious thing.

Another Happy Day at 86 Land xD On a note from the LN, at this point while they have opened up a bit to the people in Giad they still have their hearts closed without realizing it. What they were thinking / feeling at the grave of all the 86 was 2 things. For one they were grateful that they were trying to treat them like humans with dignity, but on another layer, they also felt they didn't understood them at all. They weren't fighting for some recognition or anything like that. So having a monument for their fallen comrades just felt misaligned with their core values, they didn't wanted that monument, nor the grave marker. But it was something they couldn't communicate as well since they wouldn't be understood and would only come out as ungrateful. Also, a bit of an easter egg: The name of their new unit is Nordlicht Squadron. Nordlicht = Northern Lights = Aurora Borealis. Remember in Fido's memories how Anju saw a poster about the Northern Lights saying how they would "change your life" and then Daiya saying how he wanted to take Anju to them too?

The pain of waiting weekly as 86 aired, but rewatching 86 3x a week is very nice :) Eighty Six doesnt give anyone a break LOL

Eugene points out that the army having "mascots" like Frederica is an old Giad tradition that no one actually likes. Considering we don't see any other young children in the barracks, it's likely that it's not done often anymore, or maybe not at all. Frederica is a special case because she's one of the last remnants of the old Giad, and she also has her own reasons for wanting to stick close to Shin and the other 86. The tradition just gives her an excuse to do so.

Yep an we are back in the trauma of war. This series does such a good job an depicting war in its most gruesome and inglorious side. War isn't glorious or cool, it is misery, dispair and trauma. Felling tears for Shin in this episode... Yeah it just isn't fair! I was also hit really hard by Eugene's death and just like you it was mainly for Shin and what he must be feeling. It is awful. Still cannot believe an anime is able to feel these emotions. It is just an anime, why are we crying so hard? Why does our throats constrict in devastation and loss? The way this anime triggers human empathy is just unbelievable.

Yeah this something that permeates their relationship in the light novels, but is never really told well in the animes. The giadians are so busy doing what they think is right for the 86,that they never stop to ask what the 86 actually want. Shin and the rest always feel like what Giad is doing is more about making themselves feel better about themselves, to prove to themselves that they are better than the empire, their predecessors. They are using the 86 to make themselves feel better about themselves. This is why the 86 don't really trust the giadians fully.
