Yup, there is a LOT of symbolism used in this series. A lot to put attention to. On a note, something they never explain fully, the mechanical butterflies (einstagfliege) have 2 functions. One, to capture solar energy to distribute it to the legion. Second to intercept and block any electronical communication, which is why Shin tells Lena to not use that channel, also which is why they use the "telepathy" of the Para-Raid. Because the legion cannot intercept that. They have a small battery which is why they fall off after the battles, when their batteries run off. Also on a comment you made, their units are basically pieces of trash, the Republic says that they are superior to the legion but that's also a lie. They are basically "alluminium coffins", since the 86 are not seen as humans but as "processors" (just a mechanical part of the robot), there's absolutely no attention to "safety features" built into them, so any hit might injure them badly or kill them very easily. They also break really easy which is why Shin gets scolded by the mechanic a lot, because his moves end up breaking his unit a lot and they don't receive much spare parts. As for the rest of the questions, you will find out later on.

just gonna join the OST praises since i've already mentioned the composers from AOT (Sawano & Yamamoto) worked on these so every non & battle music are going to be such a treat just like this ep🥳 and the ending songs Avid and Hands Up To The Sky (that you probably already listened from episode 4)

That's the element I love most about this series (and light novels) the historical bits here and there, I'm a bit of a war history afficionado myself and finding out the easter eggs and mixes of cultures and countries through the series is something that I like a lot :3

The light novel original had some explanations about the warring nations. The simplest explanation is that the Giad Empire was a military giant that developed the Legion and, being great jerks, they started invading San Magnolia and all that.

I wonder why in the romanized form Giad is spelled that way. In the Japanese original, it was ギアーデ or Giade with the e pronounced like é in French. Not that it makes any difference of course.

they told it this ep - the neighbour country declared war and the maschines are still carring out this order. You learn more about the other country in later eps but its just simple "wanting more land"
