The word game they were playing is called shiritori. You have to start your word or phrase with the last kana of the previous one. In this case, they also had the added rule that the words had to be related to bitter things.

I agree! One of the very few animes that you can genuinely say it "changed your life" and it's not an exaggeration in the slightest. It sure was one wet season when Clannad After Story and Toradora were airing at the same time 😭

Clannad (including the After Story) is a great show, but for the purpose of putting it on here, it's rather long with a total of 47 episodes, including the four extras/OVAs and one highlight compilation.
